I think that the easiest explanation is the most probable. Her parents gave her something to make her sleep, she stopped breathing, they panicked and hid her body. After they came back, they raised the alarm and told everyone that she had gone missing.

I'd almost buy that except... where's the body, then? They didn't have a whole lot of time, they weren't on their home turf. Where and how do you hide a body so well that one of Europe's biggest manhunts doesn't uncover it and nobody notices the odor of decomposition? I mean, how much time did they have to accomplish this? Because they can't have done it AFTER the alarm was raised, there were too many people watching.
