Re: What legal things would you make illegal?

No, I would not allow for religious reasons. Babies do feel pain.

Unless you also advocate for FMG for religious purposes, why would you advocate for male circumcision?

Because FGM causes life-long pain and inability to experience sexual pleasure. Male circumcision removes the foreskin and has negligible future effect. Totally different things, and I think comparing them is ridiculous.

I'm against circumcision. I think it is wrong. I don't think doing such a think without a child's consent is a good thing. But circumcision is such an essential part of the Jewish faith that I don't feel comfortable telling them they can't do it. And at that point, I don't thin you can say okay for Jewish people, not okay for other religions, even though it is essential for Jews in a way it isn't for other faiths.

But then again, I'v changed my on this several times. I'm not entirely sold. I'm just uncomfortable telling someone who sees it as so important to their faith that they can't when the harm caused is so negligible. It is a balancing act to me, and in this case I think that I think it tilts on the side of religion.

Not all FGM causes life long pain or inability to experience sexual pleasure. Are you okay with ones that don't being performed?

Male circumcision kills babies every year. That doesn't even account for botched ones. Not super negligible for those children who are mutilated by parents.

It kills babies? I did not know that. Yes, okay, going to have to do some more research, but probably agree with you then.

Yes, on average 100 boys a year are killed by it.

Then you also have tragedies like David Reimer. https://slate.com/technology/2004/06/why-did-david-reimer-commit-suicide.html

Okay, wow. Okay, I officially agree with you. Should be illegal unless medically necessary.

I feel terrible for the guy every time I see this story but a scammy surgeon named Dr. Money is so on the nose

Is it religiously necessary to do it while the person is an infant?
Could they not opt-in to do it later as a legal adult if they want to?

Genuine question. I don't know much about the rules.

My understanding is that it is meant to be done at a certain age. People who later join the faith can do it to themselves later, but Jewish parents are supposed to do it to their infants.

That being said, someone just informed me that it can kill. Which I didn't know. So I'm taking back what I said. Should be illegal.

I am against circumcision but comparing it to FGM is not apples to apples. FGM would be more akin to castration.

Depends on the type of FGM. Type IV involves "pricking, piercing, incising, scraping, stretching and cauterising the genital area."

Yeah if you’re going to pick the one category of the term that happens to be a catch all and ignore the first three more common types...

I’m not saying circumcision isn’t bad, but acting like it’s just as bad as FGM just doesn’t sit right with me. It doesn’t have to be as bad as FGM to be illegal.
