I'd never say this to the authors, and it's a wee bit melodramatic, but I hate it so much when I see a fic that hasn't been updated in 2+ years and the last note is something like, "There's going to be a break in updates until after exams!", or, "On hiatus until January!" and I'm just sitting here like, which January? You last updated in 2015...

It's just funny to me at this point that people (and I mean the writers themselves not the readers) somehow don't recognize the pattern. I get not wanting to give up on the story but it's so rare for anything like that to come back once it goes on hiatus

Oops, I’m one of those authors. Well, I actually only did that on my last fic. I put it on hiatus ‘cause of exams, then I get into college and started working and, oops, it’s been six years and I no longer have any motivation to finish the fic. I feel pretty bad about it, so I’m not gonna post the fic I’m currently working on until it’s done.

I only get mad when people mark their fic as complete when it's not, BECAUSE they don't intend to finish it, and then have a note where it abruptly ends in the middle of the story like "hey so I'm never going to finish this ever so stop asking me about it."

Bitch what. Mark it as incomplete. Delete it. Don't do this shit.

Oh yeah, I fucking hate that. Mate, I'm looking for *finished* fic. I *filtered* by *finished*. Don't mark it as finished when you abandoned it! Just slap a big ol' INCOMPLETE AND ABANDONED in the summary and go on your merrily!

+1

Yes! That is the worst! Thankfully I've only run into it a couple of times but it's such a wtf moment each time. I mean I'm even okay with them adding a note that they're never going to update, but don't mark it complete!

As someone who is guilty of this, I feel like I had a pretty good excuse. Got sick, almost died, six years to physically recover and in that time it reduced much of my life to Ashes. Another four years to pick my life back up. After all that I couldn't find inspiration or time to finish. Maybe one day I will.

I'm glad you're okay! *Offers hugs*

I get this same frustration with podcasts that just suddenly stop. The podcasters don't post to social media, they don't put out a short update saying they're ending the podcast. I have to go on a google hunt to find out if they're even alive anymore, and I don't always get an answer!

Even worse: You get the notification for a new update on a fanfic you loved but that you already kind of resigned to being abandoned because it hadn't been updated in months or even years and you get all excited and then... the "new chapter" turns out to be the author telling people they've abandoned the fic.
Like, really? You think the fact you didn't update for 3 years didn't get the point across? Just put that in a note in your fic summary or at the end of the last chapter you uploaded!
