Johnny Depp

Has publicly filed suit and come out with evidence showing he was being abused and attacked by Amber Heard. Interesting stuff.

This is exactly why I never condemn until all the information is out there.

"Amber Heard hit Johnny Depp" does not disprove "Johnny Depp hit Amber Heard".

Re: Johnny Depp

(Anonymous) 2019-03-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
But I guarantee you're not gonna hear about how Amber Heard is a monster who should be taken out of society. In fact you're probably gonna hear people postulating that it was self-defense.

Re: Johnny Depp

90% of what I've heard is just straight-up "guess this means Johnny Depp did nothing wrong" so really it all seems pretty baffling to me.

Actually, I think this depends very strongly on what circles you hang out in. I think there will be a TON of people rushing to crow about how they've said all along that Amber Heard is a psychopathic bitch and Johnny Depp is misunderstood and innocent. They just won't be many of the same people who wanted to lock Johnny Depp up and throw away the key.

Re: Johnny Depp

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-03-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
No, it doesn't, but it certainly changes her image of 'totally blameless person being attacked' and, if all true, paints her as a rather horrible person doing something horrible for attention and promotion.

Re: Johnny Depp

(Anonymous) 2019-03-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
No but it very much changes things in regards to the motive - because an abused person lashing out at their abuser in retaliation is a very, very different situation.

Re: Johnny Depp

(Anonymous) 2019-03-18 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
How do you know that it's a case of "an abused person lashing out at their abuser" and how do you know which is which?

Re: Johnny Depp

(Anonymous) 2019-03-18 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's the point: While it remains to be seen, you have a lot of people who really badly want to believe in "she is still the true victim because she just retaliated" despite her being the one with a history of abusive behaviour in a relationship and they did/will not fall all over themselves to give Depp the same benefit of the doubt.

Well, I mean, there's a chance they were both abusive?.

Laughing at that second link bringing up Marilyn Manson as a "notable" person who has supported JD.

Re: Johnny Depp

(Anonymous) 2019-03-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Why is that laugh worthy?

Re: Johnny Depp

(Anonymous) 2019-03-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Laughing because he's not exactly known for treating women well. In fact, one of his exes just recently spoke out about an abusive relationship she was in years ago, strongly implying that it was him.

Evan Rachel Wood?

Ever heard MM speak? He's a pretty smart guy and, yes, he's notable.

Re: Johnny Depp

Marilyn Manson in 2009 on his breakup with Evan Rachel Wood:

"My walls were covered in scrawlings of the lyrics and cocaine bags nailed to the wall. And I did have an experience where I was struggling to deal with being alone and being forsaken and being betrayed by putting your trust in one person, and making the mistake of that being the wrong person.... And every time I called her that day -- I called 158 times -- I took a razorblade and I cut myself on my face or on my hands.

"I look back and it was a really stupid thing to do. This was intentional, this was a scarification, and this was like a tattoo. I wanted to show her the pain she put me through. It was like, 'I want you to physically see what you've done.' It sounds made up but it's completely true and I don't give a shit if people believe it or not. I've got the scars to prove it."

Calling your ex 158 times in a day to tell her you're physically abusing yourself. There's a man who knows non-abusive, healthy relationships with women for sure. Worth listening to.

Guy in a shitty mental place, cutting himself and possibly on drugs admitting publicly it was a stupid thing to do.

Yeah, how awful.

I have no doubt he was abused by her. Of the two of them, she is the only one with a history of abusing her partners. That's not to say he didn't abuse her back, but I think it's terrible how one-sided this has all been portrayed in the media and in fandom circles.

Johnny Depp had an emotionally abusive mother. From what I can tell, she started dying, and he reacted by leaving his long-term supportive partner and kids and hooking up with this (surprise!) emotionally abusive young woman in a relationship that mimicked the exact one he was having to confront with his dying mother. In fact, I think the huge fight that Amber video-taped was right after his mother's death, wasn't it? I'm not making excuses for him, just noting that he has never displayed any sort of pattern of abuse, but rather a very unhealthy response to a major life stressor in this instance. It was all very poor decision-making on his part (I actually think leaving his partner was the worst part), but surely anyone with any empathy can understand what he was going through and why he reacted the way he did. But throughout the years, he has shown the utmost of gentility and sensitivity towards women, and I think it's a shame his career and reputation will be permanently tarnished by this one relationship. I'm glad he's decided to go for at least some retribution.

I didn't know any of this - I'm not in the habit of looking up personal info on people as a rule.

I think he's not looking for retribution, but simply to be heard and for the whole story to be told, which is a good thing.

Me neither, but I'll admit I've followed JD's life and career with some interest. He was my first teenage crush.

Yes, perhaps retribution was a poor choice of words. I think you're right in saying he just wants his side to be known.

While Depp offered that his first big purchase when he started making money in Hollywood was a house for his mother, Betty Sue. “My mom was born in a f—ing holler in eastern Kentucky. Her poor f—ing ass was on phenobarbital at 12,” he said. As the youngest of four, Depp described “irrational beatings” he received from his mother, and that she was “still his mom” even though she hurled things. “Maybe it’s an ashtray coming your way. Maybe you’re gonna get clunked with the phone,” Depp said. “It was a ghost house — no one talked. I don’t think there ever was a way I thought about people, especially women, other than ‘I can fix them.'” Depp also said he worshiped Betty Sue, but “she could be a real bitch on wheels.” At her 2016 funeral, he said: “My mom was maybe the meanest human being I have ever met in my life.”

He's sucked at acting for at least the last 10 years of his career, so I find it hard to believe that he's lying about this.

It's anybody's game if it turns out he's been in an oddly chemistry-free relationship with HBC this whole time.
