[Director James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy franchise]

Apparently his firing was a bit of a mess. Supposedly it was Bob Iger who fired him because he was told the board of directors unanimously agreed he should be. But it was the huge misunderstanding. Feige had to have several conversations with Horn/Iger to get him rehired.

I don't know if he should have been hired or fired or hired again, but i *do* know that it irritates me no end to see the asshat fanboys on the Marvel and Sci Fi FBs i follow gloating about how him being re-hired is 'justice (for men)' and how all the 'triggered snowflakes' can suck it now.

They're generally the same ones trying to convince you that Disney is lying about how much money CM is making and that Brie Larson is some kind of 'femi-nazi' man hater.

It's weird because those are basically the same people who got him fired in the first place

Probably.

Stop following those groups. I've seen nothing like that, and I frequent Reddit.

Eh, they have movie news and such that I like to see, but I'm making a new FB page soon (when my name change is all legal and done), and will be unfollowing and unfriending a lot of stuff.

Really ironic that those "men" would be happy about this considering it was the Trump fanboy MRA's that wanted to get Gunn canceled in the first place.

Well, they also are 100 percent sure that Disney is involved in some kind of conspiracy to inflate CM's boxoffice numbers by lying and/or buying up tickets and/or coercing theater owners so....who fucking knows.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed! I don't think anyone should be fired because of tweets.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That seems like it's a little too broad of a policy. Surely you have to look at the context, what was said, the person's behavior after the fact, all the rest of it? I mean, ultimately, Twitter is no different from any other public platform.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, employers are obviously going to do whatever suits their bottom line. But I don't think outraged twitter mobs make the best judge and jury.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"people on Twitter should not decide who gets fired" is a totally different idea than "people shouldn't get fired for Tweets"! I agree that you shouldn't just be fired for having a tweet that's, like, controversial. But I think there are tweets that really are bad that one could deserve to get fired for, depending on the context.

And then, like you say, ultimately companies are going to do what they want to.

Nah, you tweet bad shit in the present day while employed by someone and you get fired, tough.

Going back 10 years to things he (allegedly) apologized for and hasn't acted similarly to is bS.

though how much would you bet that Disney knew about his past tweets beforehand?

I don't hold anything against the people still angry at him but still.

The whole thing feels a bit like they either didn't really want to get rid of him in the first place or no other director would take on the job and they really want to release the third part. It's perhaps a mixture of both.

I have such mixed feelings about the situation in the first place that I didn't really have much of an emotion when I read he was rehired. I just felt sort of...neutral/numb/tired?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they were kind of stuck because Gunn wrote the script and the cast were all supporting him. And no other big name directors wanted cross the picket lines, so to speak.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I still feel extremely dubious about him. I don't care that 'culture was different 10 years ago' because he was still a grown man ten years ago and those types of 'jokes' are gross.

[personal profile] morieris 2019-03-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is why I don't fault people for still going "Fuck him." He was still an adult.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-03-21 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This. He was a grown man who is really not taking responsibility for being a gross fuck. I don't care if it was ten days ago or ten years ago.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, he did? He apologized even before he was hired by Disney. What do you want him to do? Join a police squad and go after crime?

I think most people aren't trying to justify the jokes themselves, they're pointing out that Gunn had already acknowledged and apologized for them prior to his firing and most importantly - he'd made a concerted effort to change and not make stupid, awful jokes like that anymore.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
+1, they were dumb and awful jokes, but he'd apologised for them and not repeated the behaviour. That's exactly what people *should* be doing!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
While I don't think his tweets were all that bad, they were gross, and I supported the decision to fire him. Full disclosure: this may be because I've had an irrational dislike of him for years. It just confirms that Disney makes profit>principle decisions. Not surprised that that'd be their attitude, but just disappointed. Since Guardians is not my favorite franchise, I'll probably be skipping the theater for #3.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
A white man got fired and rehired? Big fucking deal.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-22 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I would've been more shocked if they didn't rehire him. It was inevitable. Look at who he is. They get forgiven for being turds constantly. It's the default.
