Is there a gender double standard at play? I don't remember Tolkien fans complaining about additional information outside the books; quite the contrary. There's a long tradition of trying to get additional information from creators. Cons are built in part on it. Why does JKR inspire such a performance of irritation?

...

Is she paying the press to complain about her just for the publicity?

I'm pretty sure that if Tolkien had ever gone on record saying that hobbits typically shit where they stand and Gandalf was totes for real in a sexual relationship with Treebeard the whole time, but it was never mentioned because that wasn't part of Frodo's journey, the fans would have been just fine with it. Truly, it is only JKR's girlbits that make her revelations less welcome.

You're right, Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship never came up at all in the last book.

Look, Gandalf's relationship with Treebeard was very special to him, but it was never meant to be.

You sound like the people who didn't know Loras and Renly were lovers until the show made it blatant.

This is what heteronormativity looks like. If it were a man and woman, nobody would question it if was stated they were intimate.

Funny how Rowling revealing who Neville or Luna got married to didn't receive as much scorn or ridicule as Rowling revealing that Dumbledore's relationship with the man who he told Harry had "inflamed" him was sexual.

Tolkien never had twitter.

Tolkien didn't have a social media marketing campaign, and initially protested the publication of notes that he wrote for himself as part of Lord of the Rings. (I think he had the right idea.)

But yes, gender is a part of it, along with really stupid ideas about "Word of God," and the decline of real journalism in favor of "celebrity tweeted something today.

No. Can you imagine if GRRM started doing this shit, on top of the hell he already catches?

I don't know a lot about Tolkien, but my impression of him is that he was meticulous and consistent with any extra-canonical lore he created. He created entire languages for his universe. If Rowling had offered something like this instead of the inane trivia she spews, I don't doubt the response would've been overwhelmingly positive.

He didn't confirm Loras and Renly were fucking outside the books, or that Jon Connington was gay?

The books themselves heavily imply Loras and Renly are together, it’s not like Rowling’s “hm you know what, dumbledore is gay!!”
