Small things that unexpectedly depressed you

Sometimes it's small, seemingly unimportant things that give you a gutpunch. What are some things that unexpectedly depressed you a whole lot?

Seeing a nice collection up for sale at a resale shop. It's almost always from an old person who died or got booted to a retirement home.

I live in a mountainous area covered with forests. Right across our living room window is a small mountain. There used to be a big fir tree right on top of it, especially visible because the area around it is covered in much lower beeches.
During some storms recently, it must have fallen over or got hit by lightning because it's gone now. And hey, fir trees do that and it was in a spot where it was exposed to strong winds a lot, so it's a miracle it even survived that long.

But it was there as long as I can remember. We tried hiking up the mountain to find it a few times but it was impossible to find from the ground. And I feel silly about it but when I saw that it was gone today, I cried harder than I had in months.

Oh, that would have hit me hard too. Just one of those little things, but yeah, I feel you.

Seeing dead cats at the side of roads. Ruins my whole day every time.

The other day I read out Kemal Atatürk's Gallipoli speech to a friend of mine, and started crying uncontrollably. It's a very moving speech, but I've read it many times before and never had a reaction like that!

The other night my best friend’s daughter and mother were talking about their granddaughter/grandmother hangout days where they go out on errands and give the parents some time to themselves. It depresses me because my mom never got that with my sister’s kids, because she’s HELLISHLY possessive, and I’m not having kids so she can’t get that from me.

There's a small local business in my city that's been in business 30+ years and always had the same billboard in the same place. It has headshots of the owners - a husband and wife - with their names underneath. A while ago, I happened to notice that "In Loving Memory" had been added below the wife's name. It still bums me out when I think about it.

I saw something decorative I liked but it was too expensive for me. My friend who has similar taste but more money bought it and now I have to see it whenever I go to her house. I'm mad at myself for how upset it made me because it's stupid but I think I won't ever have the financial security to make a place look like home and not be embarrassed to have visitors, and I keep remembering how uncomfortable she was at my place when she saw I had like nothing in the fridge.

Luke Perry and Keith Flint dying in the same week, not that I was a huge fan of either but they were about my age.
