Ships you love with a fandom you hate

Malec. I'm not in the fandom but from the little I've seen it can be over-zealous to an uncomfortable degree. It's a very SJW (emphasis on the 'warrior') sort of fandom.

Any of my Doctor Who or Star Wars ships just because those two fandoms have become so toxic.

I was really into Clint/Natasha for a while, but the fandom turned me off it.

All my Star Wars ships. Not even mentioning them here, except Sinjir/Conder cause I refuse to believe that there are people who hate them (... there probably are. Just not here.)

Jaime/Brienne, GoT (ASoIaF)

God damn. Fandom was great when it was limited to LJ, but then it got moved to some message board that's just filled with psychotic hatred for everything that isn't J/B. It pisses me off and saddens me because I just want to geek out over J/B without hearing how stupid and shitty everybody else/everything else is in the books/show like every five seconds.

It sucks, because I'm SUPPOSED to be on the same team as them, but I can't stand them at all.

Re: Ships you love with a fandom you hate

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Catradora. I hate the whole She-Ra fandom, but the Catradora fandom is especially bad because it's almost all antis who throw a fit over "toxic" ships in other fandoms with complete lack of awareness that Catradora is a toxic ship, and if you point that out to them you're branded dangerous and a lesbophobe.

I like Catradora because it's toxic. To make it nontoxic you have to make the characters OOC, and the fandom does.

Do you think SJW is useful as a term?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a buzzword, yeah, but does it describe the phenomenon well enough to use despite the baggage.

Re: Do you think SJW is useful as a term?

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-03-24 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. At this point, it is used by certain people to describe anyone they don't like and to silence any discussion about discrimination. Maybe it once had a slightly useful role, though I think the people that would actually qualify for the strict meaning is very small. But now it has been too overused and too widely used to have any meaning.

Re: Do you think SJW is useful as a term?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but only in certain contexts where people are coming from a similiar place of understanding. While social justice on the whole is good, there's definitely the type of person who uses social justice as a means to look good instead of doing good and ignores the negative ramifications of

Re: Do you think SJW is useful as a term?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the term is highly dependent on context. Some people call themselves that, which I think is fine.

What's interesting to me is that when I first heard/read it, it really was meant to apply to people who got offended over the dumbest things. In my understanding at least, SJWs were more trolls who knew you weren't actually trying to be offensive and just wanted to get a rise out of you. Or who actually were offended for stupid reasons. Legitimately stupid reasons. I still come close to using it that way before catching myself, because I'm not actually against social justice. I'm just against being a jerk about it.

Re: Do you think SJW is useful as a term?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. IMHO anyone describing themself as a "warrior" shoots themself in the foot. Can't take them seriously. What is wrong with "activist"? can't we go bacl to that instead?

Re: Do you think SJW is useful as a term?

All terms are useful in some context. It's hard to think of one that isn't ever.

[personal profile] dahli 2019-03-25 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Eeeeeeeh tbh no, not anymore. It used to be but now it's used as a buzzword so much it has lost its meaning. Or rather, it has gained a new meaning all-together: "thing I don't like and make me feel threatened by? SJW!!"

Reminds me of the case where a female editor for Marvel comics (I think) went with a group of girls for milkshakes, they took a picture and uploaded it to twitter along the lines of "Milkshake Club!" aaand the poor editor got attacked being called an SJW among other things. My memory is kinda murky on this, but my point is that it has just become another insult on the internet.

Re: Do you think SJW is useful as a term?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Seeing "SJW" in a game review is an excellent sign that the reviewer doesn't give a fuck about the actual mechanics, systems, or implementation of the game, they're just trolling because the publisher did something "bad" for gamers.

Vegeta as villain to morally grey to villain for 5 minutes to hero is great.

Jaime Lannister is a hero or villain depending on who he is around.

Andrew Ryan from Bioshock is pretty morally grey. Especially if you read the book.

Re: Who are your favorite morally grey characters?

Sinjir Rath Velus (Star Wars - Aftermath) used to interrogate aka torture people for the Empire (which he disliked, but apparently not enough to defect for years) and ends up being important in the New Republic after going through character development/introspective.

Vegeta (Dragonball)
Seto Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh)
Will Graham (after season 2-ish of Hannibal)

A question

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
What is it about the way Vanya dressed that pinged people that she must be a lesbian? Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5, the most I think about how a person is dressed is either 'These clothes look nice.' or 'These clothes don't look nice.'

Fwiw I have no problems with lesbian Vanya, I was just wondering.
