Re: Controversial Opinions

I think a lot of Harry Potter fans just really hate JK Rowling, and always have. Not that there aren't issues, because there are. There really are. But let's be real, fandom's always hated on the woman.

I've been in HP fandom since the early 2000s. For the most part, I don't think people hate JKR. I think her work inspires such passion in people that they feel almost personally attacked when she takes it in a direction they don't like.

But then there are also the "fans" who go on and on about how problematic she is for [insert woke agenda], and that's tiring because it feels like all the typical performative outrage we're constantly bombarded with. But I don't think they hate her, either.

AYRT: Me too. You're probably right that "hate" is strong, but I do feel she was constantly being criticized by fans. I do think you're right that they felt almost personally attacked because of how passionate they got.

I actually think it's a testament to the strength of her work that it inspires such passion.

But the endless criticism is really annoying, yeah.

I'm curious, but what makes you say that? I was never in the fandom and from the outside, it looked like Rowling was very much a beloved creator. I thought things kind of started to sour when the whole "Dumbledore is gay" tweet happened.

AYRT: Oh, in fandom she could say that Dobby's socks were blue and fandomers would get mad because she ruined their fanfic. That's the thing. I do think the more recent criticism is totally valid, but I also think that for many, they're just frustrated that the books didn't turn out how they wanted. Even that is valid, TBH, but the anger over it. There was a lot of anger. Or she'd do interviews and people would say the same thing, that she was saying too much when she was just answering questions. That was it.

So I think it's a mix of people who loved her and just have reservations due to more recent tweets, which is reasonable, and people who just... stopped liking the books, stopped liking her, and now have actual reasons to not like her.

Huh. I mean yeah, there's always the random fan who gets mad at every little thing, but this was a widespread trend from the beginning?

I disagree, and think you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find firm evidence to support that.

The size of the fandom also has something to do with it. Every series has it's haters and everyone read Harry Potter.
