Controversial Opinions

nothing better for a lazy sunday

I think buying from Amazon or Walmart is worse than buying from Chick-Fil-A. Chick-Fil-A treats its employee's better and every mega corp funds reprehensible things. It's more of a pick your poison type of deal.

Re: Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I would find it slightly different in that Chick-Fil-A goes out of its way to do the bad things it does. Whereas Amazon and Walmart do it as a matter of business.

The distinction between "not caring about the harmful collateral effects of action X" and "intentionally going out of its way to specifically do harmful action X."

I'm not saying any of these companies are good, to be clear.

I don't boycott for ideological reasons, but I have totally boycotted Amazon, and I am extremely concerned about the direction we're headed if they are left unchecked to keep monopolizing. Since I started my boycott (about 6 months ago), I've discovered that it's really hard to actually find stock in brick-and-mortar stores. You go, and shelves are bare. Where you used to have 5 choices of socks, e.g., you now have 2-3. Often I have just gone without because I couldn't find something locally and didn't want to pay shipping from a site other than Amazon.

And since I know someone will chime in with the usual refrain of CAPITALISM BAD - no, I don't believe capitalism is bad. I love capitalism. I love the choices and creature comforts it has made possible. My concern is corporations, particularly those that actually grow so large that they LIMIT the choices that capitalism is meant to provide.

I don't buy from any of them unless i'm forced to (I live in a super-small town without a lot of shopping options). Don't see there has to be a 'worse' - they all suck.

I often watch Ben Shapiro, and I think he's nowhere near as bad as the other right-wingers. He's not a skeevy woman-hater with an impure sexual past, he is pro-religious freedom for all religions, including Islam and he actually has a sense of humor.

"Palestinian hatred of Jews is religious, and cannot be satiated except via Jewish suicide... this is a religious war waged by Muslims against Jews." - Ben Shapiro

"Israelis like to build. Arabs like to bomb crap and live in open sewage. This is not a difficult issue." - Ben Shapiro

"Viewed in its starkest terms, the Arab-Israeli conflict may be accurately described as a war between darkness and light." - Ben Shapiro

"Rahm Emanuel's presence in the Obama cabinet doesn't ameliorate Obama's anti-Semitism -- it just provides it convenient cover... Emanuel is a kapo." - Ben Shapiro

I think a lot of Harry Potter fans just really hate JK Rowling, and always have. Not that there aren't issues, because there are. There really are. But let's be real, fandom's always hated on the woman.

Re: Controversial Opinions

I've been in HP fandom since the early 2000s. For the most part, I don't think people hate JKR. I think her work inspires such passion in people that they feel almost personally attacked when she takes it in a direction they don't like.

But then there are also the "fans" who go on and on about how problematic she is for [insert woke agenda], and that's tiring because it feels like all the typical performative outrage we're constantly bombarded with. But I don't think they hate her, either.

I'm curious, but what makes you say that? I was never in the fandom and from the outside, it looked like Rowling was very much a beloved creator. I thought things kind of started to sour when the whole "Dumbledore is gay" tweet happened.

I disagree, and think you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find firm evidence to support that.

Re: Controversial Opinions

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
The size of the fandom also has something to do with it. Every series has it's haters and everyone read Harry Potter.

Re: Controversial Opinions

I think liberals who get offended the moment anyone has an opinion that even slightly differs from their own are just as over the top as the hardcore conservatives they complain about.

(FTR, am a liberal. Most liberals I know are not like this. Some are, though. They piss me off.)

Re: Controversial Opinions

We have a real problem with extremism in our politics right now. "Centrist" is a bad word.

(FTR, I'm a left-leaning moderate and feel completely disenfranchised by the current state.)

Yep. And also liberals who accuse anyone with a slightly different opinion than their's of being an alt-righter or something comparable. You can be critical about certain topics without being an alt-right "ism"-spouting asshole. In fact, you should be.

98% of "unpopular opinions" are just straight up factually incorrect, but if you call people on their hoseshit they whine and cry and hide behind the flimsy shield of "But it's my opiiiiiinioooon~!"

As soon as someone has "he/him" (moreso if there is an addition of "they/them") in their tumblr bio accompanied with gushing about how immensely GAY they are, SO SO GAY, chances are very high it's a heterosexual chick.

I'm fine with nonbinary people wanting to use they/them pronouns and it makes sense to me. But using and asking other people to use the ze/zir stuff will always cause me to roll my eyes and think of them as a precious snowflake. I won't SAY anything or be mean about it. But I think it's stupid.

Government should be taking population growth and particularly city population growth more seriously, especially with the vaccination rates so low and international travel being so commonplace. I don't know how we haven't had worse measles outbreaks yet, or anything else. I think we're on borrowed time and I don't want to be around for the next black plague situation.

Autism activism would gain more traction outside the internet if prominent autism activists stopped conflating a neurological condition with an ethnicity.
