A question

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
What is it about the way Vanya dressed that pinged people that she must be a lesbian? Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5, the most I think about how a person is dressed is either 'These clothes look nice.' or 'These clothes don't look nice.'

Fwiw I have no problems with lesbian Vanya, I was just wondering.

Maybe because most of her clothes are masculine?

She wears a lot of loose fitting masculine clothes, such as dress shirts with the collar buttoned all the way up, which creates an androgynous appearance. Obviously not everyone who dresses like that is a lesbian, and the creative choice was probably mainly to show that she is repressed, but lots of lesbians do dress that way.

Lesbian here: honestly couldn't tell you. It read to me as defensive (hiding her body under baggy/unflattering clothes), not... fashion. Or lack thereof. And tbh I don't like the continued stereotype of the masculine/badly-dressed lesbian, because it's not as prevalent as you think.

I think people just project her actress' sexuality on her and just pretend it's really the baggy clothes.

Because Ellen Page had a significant say in how she was styled. Since Ellen is gay people strongly associate the two.
