115. Holy fucking bitter, Batman.

Look, I agree that I was pissed the hell off when Kyle and Yost started rampantly killing characters left and right. In fact after Laurie bought the farm I gave up on the title altogether and stopped reading it. But a few months later I start hearing about how awesome it's been getting, so I decide to give it a chance and resume reading from where I left off.

And you know what? People were right. I'm still annoyed that they killed off so many characters, but by the arc's end they had actually managed to turn it into something awesome that I don't think they could have without doing so. new X-Men continued to be one of my favorite X-titles, because whatever else you migth say about it, it was very well written and interesting.

Young X-Men, on the other hand, is a horrible ball of character rape and shitty writing. The fact that it's overly grimdark is not the main problem, there.

NOTE: I might be getting the names of the titles confused. I'm bad like that.

149. Depends on where you live. I'm not saying I disagree with the rest of the secret, I'm just saying. It may or may not be statutory rape, especially given how wacky the Ace Attorney-verse's legal system is.

161. Ooooookay, then. You have fun with that.

172. Because jumping in front of a lightning bolt does not equal love, especially when the person doing the jumping knows that they can redirect the lightning and as such not die. It means that they care for the other person enough to want to save their life, yes, but that's not the same thing as romance.

And it doesn't change the characters' inherent personalities, which, at least to my mind would render a relationship together something of a trainwreck: Both of them are confrontational escalators (Zuko gets shouty and obnoxious when things don't go his way, Katara gets defensive over minor slights and always winds up making things worse), which would lead to a relationship that can best be described as a prolonged shouting match, IMO.

That said, I will freely admit that the last few episodes were a much better argument for the pairing than any number of TL;DR essays from the fanbase about how their love was SO TRUE~

Haha, I dunno...I think they were a great argument for why the two of them will be good friends, but I think they were ALSO an argument for why they shouldn't be left alone together too long -- they seem to bring out each other's worst qualities. Crazy Terrorist Katara + Emotionally Damaged Zuko = WHY YES THIS CRAZY REVENGE FANTASY WAS TOTALLY AN AWESOME IDEA!!!!1!!!

Though to be fair, they clearly learned something from it. Like that maybe they should listen to Aang sometimes ;3

(hahaha shit now I want to watch that episode again! I loved how the first think Zuko did when they got back was to GO AND TALK TO AANG ABOUT HOW KATARA WAS KIND OF SCARY. XD)

Uh, though all that said, whatever! people can ship what they want! It's not like I don't ship any fanon pairings!

Oh, well, yes, it's not like I ship it or anything. But it actually gave me reasons why people would ship it that I could understand which. None of the episodes prior to it, nor the resultant essays had ever done.

FAIR ENOUGH

I agree that it was rather grim and upsetting to kill off so many characters, but it was something that was at least done respectfully and you could tell the ones that survived were affected by it. The series really brought up that Mutants are not safe-- especially the children. Everything before then (unless some big bad mutant was involved) we were just told that Humans were a danger to mutants, but this series really proved it.

It's even more upsetting that YXM seems to just have characters present to relate off of Ink.

It was respectful in retrospect, but at the time it felt really cheap and pointless. By the end of the arc it had turned into something great but until that happened it seemed like a grade-A wallbanger.

I think it did something else , not just emphasize that mutants aren't safe: it also establioshed a lot of hostiloe tension between the old guard and the new one. Most comics about teenaged successor superheros has the new guys REBELLING against the people who know better apparently on general principles, but new X-Men actually did give them a good reason to be: They don't trust the old X-Men to take care of things because you were supposed to protect us and you didn't.

They weren't portrayed as young dumb teenagers, either. Sure, they all had some growing up to do, but it was a real reflection of young adults with responsibilities and expectations, too. There was so much tension and perspective that-- forgive me for being lame here-- it felt real.

Change happened, characters learned/developed from it and everything moved on as it should.

Thanks for saying that. It makes me feel a little less crazy for shipping it the way I do, if even non-shippers can say that, yeah, there's enough there in the episodes for it not to be a ridiculous crack-pairing.

I saw Zuko getting a lot better about the shouty-ness after he started becoming Iroh Jr, so I figure it's something he'd grow out of. Honestly, there's reasons why I figured either pairing wouldn't work, and why both of them were plausible.

I don't think the lightning bolt was the biggest shipper-moment of the later episodes; it looked pretty in that context, but it looked cool in any context, really (coulda done without that slow-mo "Nooooo" though).

Oh, there's definitely enough in the late third season for it to not be a crack pairing. Now, I've seen people as early as the first season claiming that they were totally destined for each other and denying it was a crack pairing, and at that time it most certainly was. But by the end of the series? Certainly not.

(You know, I'm not even certain the NOOOOO was there. I listened for it when I watched the finale again at SDCC, and I didn't hear it. I think it might be one of those things where people's memories added it in because they expected it to be there, like how when Season Three started you had a ton of people claiming that they pronounced Mai's name differently in Season Two, even though that was not the case)
