I'm all for people following their passions, but come on. The world needs more smart people who go into noble professions because they want to do good, not because they want money.

OTOH, maybe the OP has no interest in being a lawyer or a doctor and would find it soul destroying to even attempt it.

I object to the notion that being a lawyer or doctor has to be soul-destroying. Doing good things for people is rather the antithesis of soul-destroying, and doctors and lawyers have a hell of a lot of capacity to do both. If they don't mind fighting the system and making a bit less money than their counterparts.

. . . which sounds somewhat in line with the OP's values, actually. All that's added on is the helping of other people.

I didn't say it HAD to be soul-destroying, just that it would be for some people. Not everyone would be able to stand the years getting the requisite degrees to start with. We're all fulfilled by different things.
