He's clearly a huge fan of Tolkien, he just thinks there are things he would do differently. He isn't trying to bash him.

"People are always trying to set up this me-vs.-Tolkien thing, which I find very frustrating because I worship Tolkien, he’s the father of all modern fantasy, and my world would never exist had he not come first! "

Polly Pocket. I thought it'd be fun to surprise my sister (her birthday's coming up) with her favorite Polly Pocket toy that I accidentally broke when we were kids, so I started looking for it on eBay and remembered how much I loved the damn things. Now I want them all.

The more I think back on it the more I realise that I really, really enjoyed it. It was just good, solid fun.

That's a pretty bad faith read, and isn't even in keeping with what Martin's done in his own work. Of the three so-far resurrected characters (who aren't mindless husks enslaved to horrible ice zombies) in the books, only one of them has definitively changed for the worse, and that's the woman who saw her son and many of her friends betrayed and murdered before being brutally murdered herself, and snapped from the trauma even before she died. The other two are decent and committed to doing what they consider the right thing - they've paid for their resurrections with a loss of some of what makes them human, but that's human in the sense of "being a still-living member of the species animated by biology and not terrifying eldritch magic", not the ability to be moral and compassionate.

He's saying resurrection should cost and be hard and not have the character bounce immediately to who they were before, or who they were before but better. Which, valid.

Captain... Marvel?

What has mildly disappointed you recently?

I haven't read any reviews. I watched it because I saw a gifset from "Good Hunting" and thought the show looked cool. Which episodes do most of them like/dislike?

Yes! I just loved how bad ass she was without being 'masculine', and how totally cool in general the idea of an inanimate object having some kind of sentience because someone loved them (believed in, care for, take your pick).

Ahhh, I love this ship but haven't read a lot of fic because I hate trying to weed through TW fic. There's so much!

A friend and I toss this around every so often, talking about how absolutely shitty it would be to have to juggle a full-time job, a marriage, raising kids, wrangling pets, and everything... while also being a magical girl.

Like, the magical girl bit would be AMAZING.

But it would make the rest of life so, so hard.

I don't have kids or a marriage or a SO, and I still cringe at the logistics of dealing with my real life while also dealing with everything that being a magical girl entails.

We wound up deciding that one of the reasons people write teens as magical superheroes is that teens have a lot more free time in some aspects. Like, if they don't get enough sleep, they might fail a test. But they won't get fired from their job for poor performance and have to figure out how to not be homeless if they fuck up.

It'd be so hard being a magical girl and a working adult on their own.

I recently fell into the Peter/Tony ship so hard I'm basically just flailing around emotionally, trying to get some kind of bearings. It's been a long, long time since I fell hard for a new ship, and I kind of forgot how batshit intense my brain is about a ship for the first- oh- YEAR I ship it.

Also, Peter/Tony is...a lot dodgier than my usual ships (even if Peter is of legal age when they get together, which is how I prefer it), so that's a thing. I've never really shipped a pairing with a major age difference before, but lol, go big or go home I guess?

Also, there is not enough fic, there is not enough fic, there is nOT ENOUGH FIC.

I need to get a fucking grip.

Thank fuck for fanfic. That should be fandom's motto.

...But zombies have been a thing since the second or third book. Remember Catelyn, a main character who died and came back?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-26 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I do think he has a point, because I really felt like the difference between Grey and White actually came across. I understand he was supposed to change but it really did seem like the same guy.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. Age or Ultron was the worst of it for me, because I was totally ready for him to have a heart-to-heart with the twins, particularly about how he knows how it feels to stare one of his company's bombs in the face and how he had screwed up but since devoted his life to fixing it and doing better. And instead, we get "this was never my life" and he never actually talks to the twins in any meaningful way.

Books all the way. I barely watch movies and tv shows as it is lol.

I'm reading this in the voice of "Get off my lawn!" I envision OP as a cranky little old fart shaking a cane at those darn adults who had never grown up in their hearts.

I don't remember the books i read and haven't seen the show, so i'll take you at your word.

I think he's confused in his statement, because Gandalf *was* changed. Also, his death, while unpleasant, wasn't the horror-show of the GOT deaths, and he had a very different 'afterlife' experience.

Also, Gandalf isn't actually human, so there are going to be some differences.

My cold read of that quote is that he's being kind of arrogant about writing and his writing in general (though that could be from the perspective of someone who wasn't all that impressed by his books, so....).

(Anonymous) 2019-03-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
they've paid for their resurrections with a loss of some of what makes them human

What if the character wasn't human, and what they come back as is closer to what they were before they took on their more human seeming? Because that's the case with Gandalf.

Movies or books I think, not sure which one I'd pick though.

I read "peter" as "steve" for some reason and was very thrown at the second paragraph. "I knew he was in ice but wow."

(Anonymous) 2019-03-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's paracanon. Which is arguably relevant to current interpretations, but would not have been remotely relevant when Martin was reading the books as a young lad, because no one had raided Tolkien's desk for notes to sell for pocket change yet.

Tried edibles and they didn't work at all! Someone said you sometimes have to try them 3-4 times before they affect you. I don't have any time for that!
