Ehhh... yes and no. Remember that "relatable" isn't the same thing as "likeable". All characters aim to be relatable in the sense that the audience understands what they're about and cares enough to watch what they do and what happens to them, otherwise people get bored and stop watching. They don't have to be likeable, or admirable, or good - that's a different kettle of fish.

nayrt but while I agree likeable and relatable are different things, and a well-written character alerts the audience to how his or her brain ticks.. that doesn't necessarily mean a reader is relating to them. I love a lot of supervillains who are larger than life and always making insanely destructive decisions. I can feel close to them in that my brain is trying to pry into theirs and keep up, but that doesn't mean that I'm putting even a hypothetical version of myself into their shoes.

Well, sure. But that's not the only definition of relatable, which I thought I made clear in my previous comment.
