(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 03:20 am (UTC)(link)Those of us who aren't straight white men have long HAD to learn to empathize with characters we don't have these things in common with. It would build the empathy of straight white men to do the same. And while they have a WEALTH of different kinds of characters to see themselves in, other flavors of people deserve that and need that.
These are two DIFFERENT things.
Seeing yourself reflected in media has an effect on self-esteem and mental health. This is something seen in children.
Separately, relating to a character who doesn't have all the basic identity things in common with you makes you better able to look at other humans you don't have those things in common with and think 'oh, this person has the same range of thoughts and feelings, the same rich inner experience, that I do. Even though we don't share race/sex/gender etc, we might still have these things in common, knowing this person might be worth my time, and even if we aren't going to be friends, they deserve a basic level of respect'.
And a lot of straight white guys never learn that lesson, because they never spend the time in the heads of other types of people that we all spend in the heads of straight white guys.
