I had the same problem with Dunkirk.

Same.

... and with Dunkirk, I felt that was intended, at least in part.

I was ok with the main characters in Dunkirk but the Highlanders all ran together. In general I find soldiers in movies hard to tell apart. Strangely I can generally tell aircrew apart in stuff like Battle of Britain and Red Tails.

Well, that was the point? At least partially in the case of the ground troops?

Aw, that's too bad. It was really good.

OMG, same!! I kept the Fandom Wiki page open to remind myself who was who, but in the end, it was so worth it! Excellent show! Plus, by the final episode, I could finally tell them all apart, so yay?

I tried watching the first episode, but unless it gets dramatically more interesting/exciting, it's not for me. It did NOT keep my attention at all.

I would say it gets dramatically more interesting/exciting

How far in would you say? I'm not sure I could commit to like, 12 episodes of mind-numbing boredom for the last 12 to be awesome.

The Terror is only 10 episodes long. I thought it was a great suspenseful slow-burner, but if you're expecting big explosions and fight scenes in every episode, then it's probably not for you.

it's 10 episodes, and i think each one ramps stuff at a steady pace. if you've only watched the first episode, that's only sort of a setup, episode 3 in particular had some stuff i really was NOT expecting happen, i'd say at least give it until 3 or 4 to judge the show. if you're familiar with the actual terror/erebus expedition, well, things go from being not great, to terrible, to nightmarish pretty quick.

+1...watch until ep 3

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's billed as horror, is it like, psych-horror or monster-horror?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's more psychological. There's an element of monster horror, but it comes late in the series.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven’t watched The Terror but I can sympathize, if several characters don’t look visually different (eg. if all the male characters are blue eyed with short blond hair and muscles? And dress similarly?) I can’t tell them apart.

I had the same issue and it took me a couple episodes to figure it out. It's all the heavy winter clothing in similar colors and muttonchop sideburns...

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. This show definitely did to me what usually mostly Asian period dramas do: make everyone have the roughly same hair colour, hairstyle and clothing and whoosh, there goes my ability to tell people apart.

I just finished watching it a few days ago, and yeah, most of the crew members who weren't main players, as in, everyone not sir john, crozier, fitzjames, hickey, blanky, and goodsir took a real long time to put the name to the face. shows like this make me wish for a little translator's notes esque thing with explanations for some of the slang and customs, along with maybe little nametags so you could tell them apart.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-28 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading the booklet really helped me in that regard! The next time I saw it I had already an idea of who was who... And in kindle you can immediately look up the slang :D

Yeah, that's fair. A lot of them do look pretty similar. And the fact that most of them are dressed in a very similar way doesn't help matters.
