Buffy still works for me. And I think part of that is that the character archetype works in Buffy. Whedon really has only one female hero character archetype. He repeats it in everything he does. It doesn't at all work in the Avengers movies because he forces Natasha to fit into that role when she doesn't really. And it never again works quite as well as it does on Buffy. But it does work on Buffy.
