Fun story: up until just the other day, I thought this show was about a lady detective. I also thought it took place in Canada in the 1940s. Basically, I thought it was a Canadian Mrs. Bradley Mysteries/Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries type thing. I have no idea why I thought any of that.

Even when I heard it was about a woman in 1950s New York becoming a stand-up comic, I was like "So she dabbles in comedy when she's not solving mysteries?"

I'm still having trouble letting go of the mystery solving thing.

OMG. This secret is me (not literally). I thought exactly the same things

WHAT?!?!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I swear that rings a bell. Maybe there was supposed to be a show like that? Anyone?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Miss Fischer's Murder Mysteries maybe.

The titles are similar-ish.

The Frankie Drake Mysteries is a 1920s Toronto female detective show, but a lot of the costumes feel way more 1940s than 1920s to me. (Based off promo pics I've seen, I've never managed to catch the show)I can see blending that with all the "Miss X" detective stories (Miss Marple, Mrs Bradley, Miss Fisher) and getting confused

OP

I think this might have been what I was confusing it with! I haven't seen it either.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have picked that just based on that picture!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have picked stand-up comedy from that picture, either.

I also assumed mysteries were solved. I was much less interested when I learned that was not the case.

Same here. If no mysteries are there, I'm not that into it.

Same here.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, same. Probably because it sounded similar to Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Like another user said, I was less interested when I realized that it wasn't a mystery/crime show.

I kind of thought that as well, at first. When I learned that it was actually about her becoming a stand-up comic, the relative strangeness and novelty of that, as a concept to base a show on, fascinated me, and I decided to actually watch it. Turns out it's really, really good.

It is! Really great characters.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I think "solves mysteries" (or "fights crime") is such a common premise for a show, it's easy to just default to assuming that's what a drama is about.

With a few exceptions, streaming shows aren't that well advertized to people who don't have the service. Watchimg broadcast tv and YouTube, I see ads for shows, including cable shows, all the time that give me at least an inkling of what the show is about. For streaming shows, I maybe see some banner ads or a magazine page and that's it. No indication of what it's about. What is Russian Doll? Still no idea.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-31 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
maybe sounds like "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler"

(Anonymous) 2019-03-31 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I wish you were right because then I might have a new show to enjoy. As it is, I have absolutely no interest.
