I'd strangle baby Hitler. I'll strangle baby Vanya.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Are we assuming time-traveler level hindsight in this scenario

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed so?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any other babies you would strangle? A comprehensive list would be helpful

(Anonymous) 2019-03-29 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
These people are all irredeemable and basically born broken. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_serial_killers_by_number_of_victims

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
/you can help by expanding this list

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean that they would deserve death as babies

the reason to kill them as babies would be because you're a time traveler who (for whatever reason) doesn't have access to a more humane way of preventing their future misdeeds, and so the moral calculus is that killing them as a baby prevents more deaths than it saves

but it's not the case that killing them is in and of itself justified because they are irredeemably evil from birth

Vanya was fucking abused into what she became tho? You're gross.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't. No other siblings had the same result she did. Don't pretend being in the 'all abusive' club, Vanya thought she was being left out of was a reason why any of them did what they did...
Luther got sent to the moon for all his troubles, and the rest of them managed to live marginally failed lives despite it. Vanya was given every out she could have. Just because she didn't take one doesn't mean she didn't have the chance to.

She was the least abused of the siblings, even if she didn't see it that way.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
None of the others were literally drugged and mindcontrolled into submission though. Saying "she just felt left out" is dismissive and disingenuous as fuck.

You're the one freaking out about Vanya being a serial nanny killer, aren't you.

I am gonna make more anti-Vanya secrets just for you.

I agree and it really surprised me that all my friends were basically like, "Yeah, Luther made the best decision 'cause look at what Vanya did when she broke out of the isolation chamber". Well, maybe if they hadn't put her in there, she wouldn't have snapped as badly as she did.

I would have expected fandom to be ripping up Luther for that, damn.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
No one agreed with Luther. That is a fact.
It's in bad writing that everyone has a vote gets vetoed, just because the plot wanted it too. (I realize you're not talking about the characters, I just thought I'd say...)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's what really bugged me. I understand Luther making that decision and all, given his perspective, but the fact that he overruled EVERYONE on the matter, including Allison (whose vote should have counted the most in this situation, imo) really soured me toward him. And then he did is AGAIN at the theater.

Funny thing. I haven't watched the series yet (plan to, just, not in a hurry), but the one thing I HATED from the comic was how Vanya was made to be this horrible villain who deserved to die when it was pretty obvious she had been abused to hell and back by her "loving" family, that she had been tortured into going insane, and that in the end, she was the victim 100% and NO ONE in story realized that.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
i felt like it was fairly clear to the reader and that part of the tragedy was that everyone around he was too hurt themselves to be able to help her. the series mostly just expanded on that because it had so much more time! i realize you said IN THE STORY but this is actually something i think the series did better. the academy all know that they're messed up, it's just hard for them to do anything about that.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this! I thought the show did a great job of showing how messed up and self-absorbed they all are (and I mean that in the most affectionate way possible, but good lord they need to listen to each other more)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
All you needed to say was that Luther is a far worse human being then Vanya ever was, and you would be right, I'd agree even. But you didn't so I don't.
By all means Luther is at fault for Vanya's breakdown, but she is responsible for what she did as a child. Not to the extent as she is as an adult, but the same none the less...
You already made the entire attempt as to why you're wrong, so why argue...?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
How is a 4 year old responsible for what she did as a child? Does that mean Allison is responsible for what she did to Vanya too?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Luther didn't murder a bunch of people.

Murderer > Bad decisions

Those last 2 episodes were a study in cause and effect. The thing is that in the series, you can see the exact moments Vanya could been saved.. and each time Luther coming in like the koolaid man to ruin it.

I hope that when Luther goes back to the past, he realizes the best bet would be to take a look at his 'father' and realize that is not the best role model for how to deal with most all his siblings, because that is exactly why they all have issues the size of the daily planets past printings vault
