What media did you have a huge misconception about until you watched it (or researched more about it).

Thanks to a bunch of fan accounts, I thought there was a lot of homo-eroticism in Supernatural. Then I watched it and liked it enough to continue watching it, but it's nowhere near as gay as I thought it would be. Thanks, fandom.

Same but with Teen Wolf.

Yes! It was definitely that one for me.

Like, I knew Sterek wasn't canon or anything... but I was not prepared for how much they just plainly disliked each other (+ both liked Scott a looooot better) or just how little screentime they actually had together.

LOL, same here. I was both puzzled and amused to find it was kind of...aggressively heterosexual.

For a long time I thought Eyes Wide Shut was just gonna be a married couple discovering their kinkier sides, possibly attending some sex parties. Well, it's not that, but I think the promotional emphasis on Nicole Kidman made a lot of people think she would be as central as Cruise.

For years I thought both Rocky Horror Picture Show and Eraserhead were documentaries before I finally sat down to watch them. No idea why I was under that impression.

I thought Sex and the City would be pee-your-pants funny and the characters highly relatable. It was only kind of amusing and I couldn't relate to the characters at all. Thus was my reaction back when it was on the air, not years later.

I didn't watch Buffy while it was on, but the writers of the teen magazines I read did, except this was basically their summary of it:

"OMG LIKE BUFFY TOTALLY HAS SEX WITH ANGEL AND WILLOW IS A LESBIAN WITCH OH MY GOD CORDELIA IS SUCH A B-WORD BUT MAYBE KIND OF NICE NOW AND OH MY GOD BUFFY HAS A LITTLE SISTER NOW? WAAAAT?"

And frankly, a lot of teen fans on the internet had the same attitude. So of course I thought Buffy was this valley girl show with vampires, and I assumed my friends who liked it liked it as a guilty pleasure. Then I actually watched it, and was blown away.

Teenage stans also made LOST sound a lot dumber than it was. I knew LOST was deeper than they made it sound, at least, though I never did watch it.

I thought Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a police procedural. I didn't even realize it was a Michael Schur show.

Also, I hated Survivor when it was on despite not having seen a single episode. I called it "WASP Brat Eats a Bug." (I was a 20 year old social justice warrior before SJWs were really a thing.) I still don't really know how far from the truth it is, but friends whose opinions I trust have insisted it really isn't nearly that bad.

I thought La Cage Aux Folles would be both a lot funnier and a lot more outrageous than it was (shrug) I guess I'm spoiled in the drag queen humor dept.

I thought Fight Club was going to be basically a sports movie about, like boxing or something. I'm so happy I managed to go into that movie completely unspoiled.
