So I work at a library. The other day I got a call asking if we had any of the books in this series, which I’d never heard of. We didn’t have the first one she asked for, but we had some of the others, so I googled the series so I could tell the caller the ones she’d have to get elsewhere.

When I scrolled through the search results, I realized it was serial-number-scrubbed fanfiction and immediately guessed Twilight, since that was one of the most common “pull to publish” fandoms. Then I read “One Direction” and assumed the books must’ve started as slash fic. Then, after finishing the phone call, I read the publisher blurb and realized it must’ve started as self-insert fic. And I thought published Twilight fic was bad...

I don't know that I could ever bring myself to ask an actual person to locate this book for me if I had the burning desire to read it. The shame is too strong.

AYRT—maybe they saw a promo for the movie and wanted to read the books without knowing what they started as? I was always tempted to tell especially impatient people on the waitlist for copies of 50 Shades to google “Masters of the Universe pdf.” I did, made it a page and a half in, and went back to avoiding Twilight and its fandom. I’m not gonna bother hunting for the original of this trainwreck; I’ve learned my lesson.
