(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 11:07 am (UTC)(link)I think it's really weird to take a contemporary ironic and world-weary YA tone in your writing if you seem to also be deliberately modeled on 18th and 19th century adventure novels? Unless you assume that your audience is too dim to be able to parse that sort of prose.
I liked all of the research she presented at the end, though. Frankly I'd rather read a whole bunch of pop science/pop history books Lee wrote about those things than the actual novel. And then also all of the original sources she mentioned (e.g. James Boswell's diaries).
