My mom never sexually abused me, but her father raped her, and every time she said “but he provided for us, he could have left” (grandpa also raped his wife and his two sons) I would tell her “I’m pretty sure you’re quoting him.” One day she was watching a movie where a dad abused his daughter and as I walked by, she said “what my dad did was really fucked up, wasn’t it?” She was maybe in her mid-50s by then. Even after that, she couldn’t let herself hate him; I think she might’ve lived longer if she’d directed her self-loathing where it deserved to go instead.
