[Vanya Hargreeves, The Umbrella Academy]

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She was using powers to manipulate the people around her to get first chair. The orchestra wasn't impressed by her audition until she started using her hypno magic, then they liked her.

I thought that her violin playing was better because she was off her meds instead of doing an Allison.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing an Allison?
Being off her meds let her channel her powers, it made her 'feel' better, but that didn't mean she played better. Besides, it was more Harold encouraging her confidence in with to her playing then the drugs anyways.

Allison can manipulate people with her power.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, didn't exactly think that one through.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It was more Harold killing her rival...

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured that was just a given.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was more that her powers caused enough of a weird sensation to make them actually pay attention to her playing--which was better because she wasn't on her meds anymore and could put emotion into it. Her powers are definitely vaguely-defined but they seemed to be energy-manipulation, not straight-up mind control like Allison, right?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, I didn't mean to imply she had mind control powers. I always figured her powers were sorta like an amplification of her emotions sorta. So since the violin is one of the only joys she has in her life her powers made it so they felt that in the music.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought she was kinda manipulating people too. At least, she made the whole orchestra sit back down and continue playing when they tried to leave in the last episode.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But they left as soon as she got distracted and her powers didn't have a hold of them anymore. A lot happened between the audition and the first performance, I don't think Vanya had manipulated them to keep thinking she's first chair material the entire time.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed at least part of that was fear.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched it past ep 4 - does she make it out of third chair?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, during an audition where she (unknowingly) uses her powers. The first chair position only openend up because her psycho "boyfriend" murdered the old first chair player.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, I see. Yikes.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
She didn't sound good enough for a professional outfit, period.

Ha, this is a thing I do whenever there's someone playing an instrument in a TV show/movie: zero-in on it and see if they're good at miming it. Most of the time they're not but it's not enough to pull me out. I just find it amusing and I'll take an attempted faking-it over obviously-not-even-trying.

Yeah, this! I play violin, and I come from a family of musicians, so music on-screen is like a huge blaring target just waiting for us to make fun of it :p (my personal favorite is figuring out if period films use period instruments. Filmmakers are actually getting better about this nowadays). I do find it very aggravating when the actor is obviously faking it, but unless music is the point of the show, I just ignore it because finding convincing music on-screen is next to impossible. Now if music is in fact the whole point, and they can't be bothered to do a good job of it, I'm going to stop watching because it's so constantly annoying that I can't enjoy the rest of the story.

My violinist kid agrees with you.

3) Vanya is an explicitly male name.
