Yeah, seriously. It's not the only reason I side eye Whedon's claims to be feminism, but that's one of them.

I rarely like rape story lines, but I think this one could've been really, really well done. I love the idea of Mal showing up to save her, and finding all her attackers dead because she turned their sexual violence into a weapon against them.

The part where Mal non-sexually shows his respect for her afterwards is also fine with me, though not the part that I find most remarkable about the proposed plotline.

That the character has to be gang raped for Mal to respect her is bad. Not good.

Female characters don't need to be raped to be empowered. Also, this storyline was all about making Mal see things about her she already should have seen. Rape storylines should never be about a character who isn't the one being raped. Women going through trauma in order to help a male character grow is a tired trope that needs to go away.
