I have no problem with fiction about stalking or abusive behaviour, I have no problem with people who enjoy reading it and have fantasies about that sort of thing.

I do have a problem with it being marketed as romance for teens. I think publishers have more of a responsibility to make a clear distinction, because they're marketing to an audience that may not yet have the ability to make that distinction for themselves.

No, it's not a new problem. It's not the biggest problem in the world. It is still a problem though.

I'm not proposing censorship and banning it from being published or restricting who can read it. I just think it should be obvious when you pick up a book whether it is a romance or romanticised abuse.

Yeah, this. These are marketed to young men and women as ideal and romantic relationships.

i think the issue is that a lot of the time the people writing it don't even know it's abuse... there's a lot of fucked up shit wrt what women should be okay with putting up with in romantic relationships that gets thrown at us from a very young age.

AGREED. Especially 50 Shades. That's a book that should never be in the hands of a teenager who doesn't yet understand what a healthy relationship is supposed to look like, let alone an abusive one. 50 Shades should NOT be their introduction to romance.

Was 50 Shades marketed toward teenagers, though? I remember it being marketed towards adult women, for sure.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-03 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
50 Shades is adult erotica, so while teenagers certainly picked it up and read it because surprise, teenagers like porn, they weren't anywhere near the target demographic.

So... teen fiction needs preachy purity police warnings at the beginning? Have you ever read teen fiction? It is full of violence, crime, battles, killing, etc. Should Lord of the Rings have a preachy warning at the beginning advising teens not to play with swords?

nayrt but we get it. You hate women and teen girls. You think they aren't capable of reading naughty romance fantasies without self-destructing. You think women are "cunts." Now please, please fuck off.

lol this projection. Seek help, nonny.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-03 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, but it shouldn't be marketed as the best romance ever. It's obvious you shouldn't play with swords. It's not obvious that romanticized abuse is abuse when you're a fucking tween to younger teen.
