You can't live comfortably solely on a UBI if you have no job. What are they suggesting, like $10,000 UBI in America? If anything, a UBI will provide some "wiggle room" for the working class and the poor. You may not have to be homeless, starving, become ill because you can't afford to take care of yourself, etc. with a UBI. You can possibly take a class or two at a community college to further your education, treat yourself to organic food instead of cheap shit food that you usually eat because it's all you can afford...and so on and so forth. A UBI provides a lot of help!

I could agree with a supplement like that to help people squeeze by, but I don't agree with an income that covers all needs and the only incentive for people to work is "fun money".

There are LOTS of things between "bare necessities covered" and "working just for fun". I don't know where your got your idea of UBI somehow meaning a comfortable middle class income but that's not the one most people are using.

It generally just means enough money so you won't starve or be homeless.

NAYRT—most UBI proposals I’ve seen range from a low of $7,200/year to a high of $30,000/year. A living wage, where you can afford necessities (50% of your income), buy some fun stuff (30%), and put money in savings (20%), ranges from $58,000/year in Mississippi to $136,000/year in Hawaii. Source:

So even the most generous UBI covers the basics of survival in Mississippi with hardly anything left over, while being not enough to live on by itself almost everywhere else. And most UBI proposals (until everything’s fully automated and we reach post-scarcity utopia or whatever) are meant to supplement wage income, not replace it.

I don’t know anyone who would settle for a survival UBI when they had the chance at fun money as well, at least not permanently. Many people have times in their lives when other things (education, their health or the health of loved ones, a new baby, etc) should take precedence over their jobs, but they can’t quit their 9 to 5 to finish their degree or bond with their kid or make sure grandma’s broken hip heals okay or rest up after chemo.
