I'm a fanartist, but I dunno if it's just because I'm old or what, but the idea of making money off my fanart has always made me uncomfortable.

(I don't judge my friends in the community who do, and I recognize I'm in the minority here.)

Same. It's one thing if someone says "hey, I'll give you $20 to draw Wonder Woman for me," because they're paying me for my time and effort and they'd be paying me $20 to draw a picture of their dog too. But the idea of making prints or other merchandise of fanart? Yeah, no, that's not cool. I draw lots of fanart, but I make it all available for free because the characters aren't mine so I can't justify charging money for it. If someone wants to pay their own money to print it out as a poster, they're free to do that, but I'm not about to charge them for it.

I do wonder how much of this is a fandom-age thing, because I agree. Not saying that only younger/newer fans do this, because that is obviously not true, but in my experience, the longer people have been in fandom, the more resistant they are to the idea of it being a "personal business".

I see it as similiar to the old Cassie Claire laptop thing - back in the day, that was considering dodgy and exploitative by some; now Tumblr is full of younger people asking for venmo/paypal donations.
