How small is the enclosure actually? Like can the fish move around at least? Is there any pebbles/architecture for the fish to interact with?
A fish can be happy in a small enclosure just as it can be unhappy in a large one. I remember my own fish (like fifteen years ago) actually jumping out of their tank no matter what me or my mom did about it;; Sometimes fish will do what they do, be it good or bad.
I wouldn't say that your friend sucks, tbh... since it seems like they believe their doing the best for their pet. Maybe if you took a step back, and looked at the fish yourself. Taking note of why it might do what it does, and why. That might be more helpful in telling if the fish is actually unhappy, or the reasons that might make it so. Right now it seems like you're forcing the issue, which isn't always taken seriously.

+1

"Ugh. Trying to politely reason with her isn't working. She has this way of being all "oh youuuuuu" when she doesn't want to hear something. I'd like to ask her how she'd feel if she had to live her whole life in a room the size of her dorm room because hey, college students live like that in the wild, etc. etc."

Good god, does OP realize how judgy they sound. I despise animal abuse/neglect/mistreatment and even I'd be tuning the fuck out over the failed logic at this point.

Keeping a betta in a tiny plastic box is just objectively cruel, though. They need at least a one-gallon tank to thrive, and it's not as if one-gallon tanks are expensive or take up much space. They have approximately the footprint of a shoebox, so there is zero excuse for not getting one.
