Friends who suck.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-06 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
A friend just got one of those betta fish and has only a teensy plastic box for it. But it's okay because they live in small puddles in the wild! (No, they don't.) And he's happy, she can tell because he's blowing bubbles!

Ugh. Trying to politely reason with her isn't working. She has this way of being all "oh youuuuuu" when she doesn't want to hear something. I'd like to ask her how she'd feel if she had to live her whole life in a room the size of her dorm room because hey, college students live like that in the wild, etc. etc.

oh nooooooo

OP, have you visited reddit's betta specific subreddit? It's https://www.reddit.com/r/bettafish/ if you haven't, and there's a ton of useful information and links there that maybe you can use as resources to show your friend. OR, better yet, maybe consider directing your friend there, because I can tell you they are... perhaps a little bit on the militant side of taking GOOD CARE OF YOUR FISH. What this is really helpful for is also showing her how other people are treating their bettas, and setting a good standard for proper care and appreciation for them. They've also got a lot of nice pictures of how much betta colouration can improve when they're cared for properly as well.

I'll send her the link, but she's not interested in hearing opposing viewpoints. She's... not a terrible person, but kind of flighty and superficial about some things. She wants a pretty, low maintenance fish for her dorm room, and that's it.

Steal the fish, get it a proper home, and cut ties with your "friend." If she won't listen to reason about the proper way to treat a fish, she's not going to be any better with people.

I totally would, but we're strictly internet friends and don't live in the same state, never mind the same town.

How small is the enclosure actually? Like can the fish move around at least? Is there any pebbles/architecture for the fish to interact with?
A fish can be happy in a small enclosure just as it can be unhappy in a large one. I remember my own fish (like fifteen years ago) actually jumping out of their tank no matter what me or my mom did about it;; Sometimes fish will do what they do, be it good or bad.
I wouldn't say that your friend sucks, tbh... since it seems like they believe their doing the best for their pet. Maybe if you took a step back, and looked at the fish yourself. Taking note of why it might do what it does, and why. That might be more helpful in telling if the fish is actually unhappy, or the reasons that might make it so. Right now it seems like you're forcing the issue, which isn't always taken seriously.

Good god, does OP realize how judgy they sound. I despise animal abuse/neglect/mistreatment and even I'd be tuning the fuck out over the failed logic at this point.

Keeping a betta in a tiny plastic box is just objectively cruel, though. They need at least a one-gallon tank to thrive, and it's not as if one-gallon tanks are expensive or take up much space. They have approximately the footprint of a shoebox, so there is zero excuse for not getting one.
