I'm torn between agreeing with you that Jon is a heroic character cliche and the most boring part of ASOIAF/GOT and disagreeing with you in that I still hold out hope that GRRM plans to subvert it significantly. Tyrion was an irritating author-insert character (he's smart and scrappy and witty and LOVES BOOKS and gives helpful life advice to the other sympathetic underdog hero characters) but then went a hella dark direction in ADWD, not very sympathetic / author-insert-like at all. So maybe Jon will get some subversion too (like his heritage basically not mattering). Like, R+L=J was supposed to be a major plot twist (I think) and it was completely blown by people figuring it out way in advance. So I feel like even if that was all GRRM had up his sleeve regarding Jon originally, he really needs to rethink that and do something more interesting (hence why I hold out some hope for interesting subversion).
