We still don't even know how the fucking thing ends

(Anonymous) 2019-04-05 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
So?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-06 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
So there's still a chance for GRRM to subvert this particular cliche, isnt there

(Anonymous) 2019-04-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Who cares how it ends? Jon Snow is a walking cliche, and even the most original ending won't change all the cliches in his story so far.

Yeah, GRRM finishing the books. That's a good joke.

As for the show the only way to subvert his character is if he turns into a Mad King like his grandpa. But I don't see that happening so he will remain a cliche from inception all the way up to the last season.

I'm assuming that whatever happens in the show is in some sense still GRRM's idea even if it's not coming from a published book

Post I just saw on Tumblr:

“Yo, Martin has killed off a grand total of two (2) POV characters who stayed dead over the course 5000 odd pages of text. Most people don’t realize this, because they only watch the show, and therefore don’t get “I am a POV character”/“I am not a POV character” labels, but still. The main proponent of the cynical realpolitic world view that the series is known for literally died while shitting himself, Martin’s way of telling us that everything he stood for is full of shit. The main antagonist force in the series is literally the embodiment of grimdarkness itself. (The show changed this, because in the show all problems are resolved by punching things in the face, so the show needed a villain with a face that could be punched.) The world is almost certainly going to be saved due to Ned Stark having been a decent person 20 years ago. “Men’s lives have meanings, not their deaths.” Etc.”

That's a great comment, and one I totally agree with. I avoided GoT for a long time because of it's supposed cynicism, but when I actually watched it I found it's 110% NOT that. It appears that way on the surface, and if you just listen to what the characters say then you might be fooled. The world might be grimdark and horrible, but the story itself subverts those tropes all over the place.

Westeros doesn't reward the good and kind people immediately. But their goodness has lasting positive effects. Good people humanize even the greatest of villains. Cersei with her kids. Tywin with Arya. Sandor with Sansa and Arya. Theon with Sansa. Jaime with Brienne. etc. etc. etc. And for a lot of those matchups, it leads to redemption. Bad people becoming something better, because there's something better for them to believe in.

That's pretty much the opposite of cynical.

I don't actually hate Jon. There's only two characters in the show (I haven't finished the books) that I actually hate (Theon, but I don't hate him anymore, and Alliser Thorne) but Jon does not in any way excite me, interest me, or inspire my imagination. My sister thinks that the story needs him to be a paragon and the moral center of the show. That might be true but I still don't care if he lives or dies. Maybe it's partly because of Kit Harrington's completely straight forward portrayal of the character? Mostly I think it's how he's written as being nigh incorruptible.

What actually makes Daenerys an interesting and engaging character to me is that she could be a handful of choices away from going evil and I would believe that character turn. Jon is not human enough to have the chance to go dark side. He's too perfect.

I'm torn between agreeing with you that Jon is a heroic character cliche and the most boring part of ASOIAF/GOT and disagreeing with you in that I still hold out hope that GRRM plans to subvert it significantly. Tyrion was an irritating author-insert character (he's smart and scrappy and witty and LOVES BOOKS and gives helpful life advice to the other sympathetic underdog hero characters) but then went a hella dark direction in ADWD, not very sympathetic / author-insert-like at all. So maybe Jon will get some subversion too (like his heritage basically not mattering). Like, R+L=J was supposed to be a major plot twist (I think) and it was completely blown by people figuring it out way in advance. So I feel like even if that was all GRRM had up his sleeve regarding Jon originally, he really needs to rethink that and do something more interesting (hence why I hold out some hope for interesting subversion).
