I mean she not fictional, so you can have her job if you really wanted to?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Historian - yes if you have the money, time and health to complete the education required
Academic - yes if you've got your qualifications but also have the personality to do well in the high pressure and insecure job field that is academia
TV personality - yeees... so long as you have all of the above but also a photogenic appearence, are a good presenter and have the right connections to be picked in the first place.

So not technically impossible but involves a fuck load of privelege, good genetics and luck to go alongside your hard work.

Good points made here.

I also think the photogenic appearance is more of a thing for female academics. I don't doubt their ability obviously (because I know their academic backgrounds) but the majority of women who are "famous" TV history personalities are on the younger side and attractive, although you get people like Mary Beard so it's not all youthful all the time. Though Mary Beard has a very unorthodox style in that she'll swear and act like your mate on camera as opposed to being a really removed stuffy older type.

Having said all that my mum is the right generation to have fancied Michael Wood back in the day (and she admits she did) so I know male TV history presenters can be subjected to this sort of thing too. Also the fact that people like Dan Snow keep getting given shows that are definitely not related to anything he has any expertise in never mind even studied!

This. WTF is this BS about doing it if you really want to?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Err, I was just saying that it wasn't impossible. 'Put you mind to it' and all that jazz? I mean way to brake OP's spirits nonnie.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but I am the OP.

No. The above users were simply being realistic, which I already knew. You should also know that even if you said it with the best of intentions, that sort of "you can do ANYTHING you set your heart on!" advice isn't going to fool anyone with a decent IQ or life experience. It just sounds like generic pep talk advice, which is why you got the comments you got.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't mean to offend you there OP. So sorry for my halfassed comment saying something wasn't impossible. Next time I'll be sure to berate and belittle you just to make sure I don't step on any toes.
Really though, why not try for some kind of correspondence if you share the same passions? The worst thing that could happen is no response. But there I go again being positive, it must be my low IQ. Shame on me.

NA

You started this thread with a comment that literally said "so you can have her job if you really wanted to" implying it's her fault for not having it due to not "really" wanting it, or not working hard enough to get it. That's pretty berating and belittling.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
lol check your reference, I said, 'I mean shes not fictional, so you can have her job if you really wanted to?'
There is no implication there, I would know, I said it. And as the OP said 'The above users were simply being realistic, which I already knew. You should also know that even if you said it with the best of intentions, that sort of "you can do ANYTHING you set your heart on!" advice isn't going to fool anyone with a decent IQ or life experience.' they knew just as much.
Try all you want, but all I was just stating was that it 'could' happen. Don't pretend I was being clever. I don't have a high enough IQ for that.

How was your original comment in way way helpful to the secret!OP?

Person 1: I wish I didn't have cancer.
Person 2: well, you CAN not have cancer! :)

Just because it's technically true, does NOT mean it's the right thing to tell someone, who's obviously upset over not being able to obtain something they want due to circumstances outside of their control.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
First step: be born to at least medium-posh parents.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps you mean well, in which case I apologize... but that's unhelpful nonsense. Worsley is the joint chief curator for the Historic Royal Palaces - that's places like the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace. She's a published author in both fiction and non-fiction. She's a familiar presenter for historical programs and documentaries. Like another anon has already noted, you could do all that if you have the time, lots and lots of money, brains, luck and oh yes, you also have to be physically attractive. It's not a matter of "wanting". Very little in life is a matter of wanting something enough. You could, for example, want very, very much to win the lottery but that doesn't increase your odds.

Telling someone that they could achieve their dream simply by wishing it is... well. It's extremely naive, at best. That's something you tell very small children because they're too young to explain that actually, there are a lot of complex factors that go into achieving dreams and many of them will be completely out of their control.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-07 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's nice that you think that, but my level was literally just above fictional. Like wanting to be a wizard is one thing, wanting to be a historian is another all together. Besides you can't win the lottery without buying a ticket first.
