Ah yes, "bad chick flicks", aka movies and tv shows where scenes are often shot with a neutral or female gaze instead of using the male gaze even when it's not relevant. Containing multiple interesting complicated women are shown living out full lives doing things men don't care about, while having conversations with each other for entire scenes without being interrupted by a man. And usually when they are allowed to exchange lines in the presence of male characters, they often address each other and look each other in the eye. Plus! Plus! Tons of consent, and gratuitous rapes are rare, as is sexual harassment "comedy". If you like femslash, these fandoms tend to have a ton.

Or!! Or. "Bad chick flicks" is a shorthand for the fact that 98% of female-character-driven media is romance-focused, which is incredibly alienating and furthers the idea that women are only as good as who they can get to bang them?

I'm a lesbian, and I even have trouble with lesbian-focused media because it's still just romance. Can't I just... please... for once... have a woman have a story that is 100% her own? Male characters get adventures and friendship and drama without necessarily getting involved in romantic tangles as well. Why can't women?
