I'll always just read/imagine the names I prefer. Never thought about actually editing the work before, but I admit it would get rid of that nagging hiccup I still have (rare but there) when I see someone use a different name.
I mean, it's not like you're trying to repost anything or criticizing an author for having a preference. So if it helps, why not.

I don't know that I'd have the patience for all that, but whatever makes you happy! Like the nonny above, I just replace stuff in my head as I'm reading if I need to.

There were some porny X-Files fics I did this with, back in the day, because the smut was hot but Mulder and Scully called each other Fox and Dana (a heinous offence which made any fic unreadable, even just for the porn).

I've also done this a few times in more recent years, but not for the names. Instead, it was to change all instances of "cum" and "cumming" to "come" and "coming."

Ugh, why do people do that? I can live with 'cum', I suppose, but when it's turned into a verb, I just can't....
