Serious question. Can someone pinpoint exactly when anime shipping (and increasingly ALL shipping) was suddenly outlawed on the internet? Because if memory serves me right, it wasn't even three years ago when people could openly do so without being afraid of being accused of heinous crimes by antis left and right. Nobody gave a shit and it was understood that art can't hurt you. Tumblr was and apparently continues to be the single worst thing that has ever happened to fandom in countless different ways.

Sorry, but what on earth are you talking about

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
the rise of purity culture in fandom where shipping equals fetishization

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
But what does that have to do with "anime shipping" being outlawed or "all shipping" being outlawed

neither of those things is remotely true

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
There’s not a lot of anime where 99% of the characters are adults.

What?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The whole age thing in anime is ridiculous and a terrible way to gauge anything when it comes to style. Even outright saying a character is under or over 18 means nothing when so many artists have wildly different ways of drawing people, whether it be big burly baras or tiny cutesy girls. Case and point: many JoJo characters are only 14 but look like they're well into their 30's, if not older.

Wait WHAT?! *googles* Huh. I would've guessed 19 at the youngest.

'Outlawed' isn't meant to be taken literally, as in an actual written law. It's just the increasingly negative way shipping in all of its forms is being treated in numerous areas of the internet.

Yeah, I'm lost with you.

I haven't really been in fandom since the whole "abandon lj because new owners!" thing because I don't like tumblr, so I just read fic and come here and I've noticed secrets and comments about issues with shipping and I'm just like what even is going on??? It's like every other day someone mentions something about people being attacked (or not really attacked but told off or whatever, I can't think of a better word) for shipping? I'm not a huge shipper, haven't had a ship I was invested in in almost a decade and all my old ships are adults so I have no horse in this race but just... isn't shipping... like... what fandom is based on? What do people do in fandom if they are actively against shipping?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-10 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
being actively against shipping is a hobby in itself tbh. some of those people are really invested in their purity crusades - but they do have their own deemed non-problematic ships usually.

that said i don't engage in shipping either! not out of moral concerns it just doesn't interest me as much. in my fandoms i just enjoy the art and discussing the source material.

You hit the nail on the head right there.
