Different anon, I'd love to know why OP didn't enjoy The Emperor's New Groove; this is the first time I've ever seen anyone state they didn't like it and am very curious to see a negative review for it.

The friend here again (actually I've been replying to all of these, I guess I should've made the original post...).

As for The Emperor's New Groove, er, we knew that one was probably going to be a bit controversial. It's a cult favourite for a lot of the internet, a super memeable movie - well, we really didn't like it.

Context wise, possibly part of why it fell so flat with us is that neither of us watched it as children, and we were both curious about it because it seemed to be very well loved. So basically we were really not the ideal target audience for the movie.

But as for reasons - the story, pretty much. Story and characters. So STRAP YOURSELF IN FOR SOME DISCOURSE (TM).

Here's how it looked like: An ineffectual, vain, really fucking terrible mess of an authoritarian leader decides to build Mar-a-Lago a theme park aaaaall about himself on top of someone else's home. Make note, this guy basically sucks as a leader. He has pretty much zero qualifications besides being born into that position. Then through The Power of Magic, he goes through a journey with the one person whose life he was about to ruin, makes friends with him, cares about him and... guess what, he's still a shit leader. The useless theme park still gets built anyway, just on the hill next door, because clearly, this makes fine economic sense. There is absolutely no sign that he gives a flying fuck about the rest of the country he rules over, or is making any effort at all to be a better leader, or has actually got the point that every OTHER subject is worth considering. His actions come off as basically being like, oh, hey, I like THIS one person, I'll be nice to them, but as for the rest of the world, whatever.

The way it was told, it wasn't a story about the emperor guy learning he was wrong in principle all along, it was a story about him being guilted into caring about specific people while still being a dick about basically everything else. We firmly disliked it for the same reasons that we dislike romantic movies where the Jerkass Lawyer falls in love with the Spunky Activist Girl who teaches him that there is More To Life and he decides that he won't Bulldoze Her Quirky Farm after all and then moves there at the end and abandons the rest of his responsibilities - look, he's still a dick, he's just changed to become a dick who cares about One (1) Other Person (also he still builds his dumbass self-aggrandizing monument on the empty plot next door, this is heralded as a good thing for some reason).

Oh! And I nearly forgot to mention. Of COURSE, the one female character in Emperor's New Groove is coincidentally the one character who thinks he's a shit leader and who attempts to do something about it... and is portrayed as a cranky evil conniving old lady who gets infantilised and basically body horrored into becoming a cat, and we're supposed to be like, ha ha, look at the Bad Evil Lady who tried to remove a pretty despotic authoritarian ruler, what a Terrible Woman, amirite?

Like, I'm not saying Yzma was a saint or was secretly good, she was ALSO stupid and selfish and couldn't even depose of Kuzco effectively, but she wasn't exactly WORSE than Kuzco in terms of actions and how she treated other people, and she also like Kuzco does not learn a single fucking lesson at the end about what she did wrong or become a better person - that's not justice or correcting what she did wrong, it's just... petty and sad, really. And frustrating.

Anyway, we really disliked this movie! :D And now you know why.

Well each to their own. Though I really think you missed the point of the movie. The emperor was a spoilt child. Yzma was a ego maniacal murderess. The good guy didn't want to help restore the emperor and only agreed to do so because he believed the emperors promise. The journey back and all the ordeals they face are the emperors journey to redemption. By the end he's learnt to be a good person.

But I mean, most importantly it's lighthearted fun. It's not supposed to be tumblr analysed because it's just glorious, irreverent fun. Sorry you missed the boat on that one.

DA

"I'd love to know why you thought that."
"Here's why I thought that."
"Your opinion is wrong. Sorry not sorry you were wrong. Also, you shouldn't analyze any movie that's meant to be fun."

Oh, I don't disagree with you that it certainly fills the role of irreverent fun for many people, especially children! But for me, watching it as an adult, I'm afraid I just don't find spoilt children and egomaniacal murderers get bullied but then learn absolutely nothing from it. Kuzco didn't learn to be a good person, he learned to care for a single other person - which hardly redeems him, just means he's extended the limits of his selfishness.

I suppose it might be a good moral lesson for children or anyone still in the process of developing a sense of empathy and who see being a 'good person' as 'caring for other people because it makes them like you', but it really quite fell flat for me. Which is a shame! I'd been looking forward to seeing what all the fuss was about. :)

Anyway, it's a movie I have no interest in, was unsatisfied by, and would hate it if people wasted both their time and mine by recommending stuff in that vein just because I enjoy a lot of animation, so that's why it was in the 'hate' list.
