Blast from the past: Fandom!Secrets revisited

[personal profile] dancing_clown 2019-04-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I should have known when there were so many comments so early into the evening when I first did this today that I was in the old post. Sigh. Here we go again.

Fandom Secrets Revisited
All secrets in this post were chosen from the ongoing F!S Index

If any of you OP's are still here, it's been years. Do you still feel the same and find it secret-worthy, or has time changed your mind or made the once scandalous seem tame?

Let's get to it.

WARNING: Some secrets may not be work safe and may contain spoilers, triggers, and other unpleasantness.

Here's a bonus buffer comment because I just realized I'm not sure what it'll take to get the secrets to collapse; I haven't been this early before.

On one hand, I got super bored and never finished Amber Spyglass. On the other, The Last Battle is possibly the most entirely obnoxious thing I've ever been forced to read in my life. So, y'know. I'm a bit split.

I agree with everything you wrote in this comment.

Same. I'm an atheist and couldn't get into the Pullman novels. I grew up on the Narnia books and can still enjoy some of them on some levels, but the preachy allegory kind of put me off even before I became an atheist.

I'm an atheist but I also love fantasy so I consider the Narnia books just as much fantasy classics as LOTR. that being said I hated Last Battle though, for three main reasons:
1. the Susan situation
2. Killing off the Pevensie parents, which seems really unnecessarily cruel, especially since they didn't even know Narnia existed
3. I've said this before here many times but I'd be so pissed if I died and went to heaven and it really turned out to be everyone does nothing but run and eat fruit. That would bore me in ten minutes, never mind eternity!

Overall, I'd agree. Most of the Narnia books develop the fantasy better and the adventures are more engaging.

I like the idea of HDM so much more than the execution, mostly because I find Lyra insufferable. And, for a guy who's so down on Lewis for his over-the-top religious allegories, Pullman's anti-religious allegories are also eye-rollingly over-the-top. YMMV, obvs.

I wonder what hypocrisy OP was thinking of? For myself, I never liked Gwen, but I didn't watch all that much of Torchwood, so Ianto could have done something really shitty when I wasn't looking *shrug*

Only thing I can think off of the top of my head is hiding his cyber girlfriend in the basement, but on a scale of everyone's fuck ups, that is surprisingly minor.

Yep. There was a time when I thought I could manage to never be more than a decade behind the current post. That time was short.

Just wanted to give you a high-five for working on an index for these. I tried something similar a few years ago but my patience ran out three entries in. :) Good work!
