i thought his redemption was shit in general

six and a half books of the stereotypical Evil Teacher before suddenly being a hero all along makes me feel like it was never planned, just pulled out of jk's arse very late in the day (probably around the time she realised that alan rickman was too awesome to die like a chump)

I would honestly not hate it as much if this had been the stated reason - I too can understand not wanting a character played by Alan Rickman to die like a chump. (It would still be sh*t, but personally understandable.)
