Re: Fandom worries

I don't know where fandom is anymore. I don't know where it happens. And I'm afraid I'm finally at the age where I'll never be able to find it again. And if I do, I worry that I won't be accepted, or I simply won't be able to relate to people of a typical fannish age anymore.

Basically, I'm having to come to terms with the fact that my fannish life is probably over, and from now on, I'll just have to enjoy things on my own like I did before online fandom.

I’ve been feeling this hard, Anon, and I don’t know how to cope. I’ve been in fandom for well over a decade now and the thought of going back to a place without it is a hard one. I quite literally grew up in fandom spaces. For better or for worse, to say it’s had an influence on me is an understatement and I just feel kind of lost. It doesn’t help that fandom climate has changed so drastically. I keep holding onto an outdated version of fandom that I don’t think we’ll ever get back.

... You’d think that would make letting go easier but a small part of me still hopes to see it again some day. Oh well.

On the one hand, when I first started in internet fandom in the late 90s, I met a lot of people who had been in fandom since at least the early days of internet fandom, if not well before that. They had adapted to new fandom platforms and were enjoying themselves fine.

On the other hand, moving from offline to online, or moving from one social media platform to another is not a problem if you can still find active fannish spaces that are doing the kinds of things you like, e.g. having a lot of meta discussions or something. If those spaces don't exist, whether the preferred platforms are not conducive to that or the participants don't want to do that, then fandom is kind of over for me, too.
