I would have been much happier if everything about their history had remained the same EXCEPT it was left totally ambiguous whether he loved her or not. That would definitely have created a lot of fanwank (I live for that shit), but story-wise it would have been more interesting to have the official line be that his motivation for changing was friendship and true feelings of penance. Then at least the whole thing wouldn't have read like something one might find browsing an incel forum.
