[Ellen Page as Vanya]

(Anonymous) 2019-04-12 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea that how someone dresses is an indication of sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-12 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP necessarily thinks that. It's just a head canon.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-12 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not necessarily, but in my personal experience, some stereotypes exist for a reason. And butch lesbian definitely has a look similar to how Vanya dresses.

IMO it would indicate her repression thanks to the drugs/mind control more than her sexuality though.

Every subculture has fashion trends.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
SA ...looks like I'm dino-sexual, then, and so is everyone who compliments my clothes with dinosaurs on them!

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
How is that, in any way, a reasonable comparison or response?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
You: so how you dress indicates your sexuality?
Anons: no but lesbians in a certain subculture do dress that way
You: lol I’m dinosexual

Okay asshole

Lesbian here. Fuuuuuuuuucking hate the "dresses like a lesbian" thing. That isn't real. Lesbians have fashion sense that spans literally everything because-- major shock here-- individual people have their own likes and dislikes.

It is pure confirmation bias to be like well of all the people I know that dress like this, a lot of them are lesbians!! How many lesbians do you think you miss entirely because they don't "look" like lesbians to you?

Maybe that's what fucking enrages me so much about it. I had to grow up amidst adults that were always like "well you don't LOOK like a lesbian!" because I wasn't butch, this is just another page in the same goddamned rulebook and I fucking hate it.

The only twist in the entire show was Vanya being straight... (though I'm guessing it was more of a beggars can't be choosers type situation)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-12 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm that doesn't sound remotely correct to me but

(Anonymous) 2019-04-12 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Which part? ;D

(Anonymous) 2019-04-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to be crass here, because Ellen Page is a married woman, but I don't think "beggars can't be choosers" would be a remotely reasonable analysis of the situation

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... Yeah. Bad wording on my part, I meant that she became romantically involved with Leonard because he was the first person to acknowledge her in a romantic way. She's not had that sort relationship with anyone else, so maybe she doesn't know she likes women? (sorry if this still doesn't make sense I'm sick right now so my brains not working)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-12 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
(though I'm guessing it was more of a beggars can't be choosers type situation)

If you mean by that what I think you mean by that...um. Wow. No.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I probably don't, I tried for an explanation above... but yeah, should have noticed the wording before I posted. Sorry bout that...

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, ok, I gotcha. And yeah, I actually agree with you. :)

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
actually identity-based headacnons are super popular on tumblr/twitter, and lesbian is considered the 'right' one, so you'd find plenty of people who agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
There is nothing wrong with lesbian headcanon or liking lesbian characters and also the character is played by Ellen Page

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say that's fair. Personally I think she hasn't let herself think about it ("my family doesn't love me and no one else seems to care so why should I try, just throw myself into my music") and when Leonard/whatever his real name was presented himself, she just latched on from being so attention-starved.

Then throw in the sad/funny thing I saw earlier "Remember when we were twelve and Klaus said being gay was his thing so I wasn't allowed to be?" and it makes sense.

Op clarifying

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
(Original commenter op from the too lazy to make thread) I’m a lesbian who dresses like that. As I say in the secret, projection. I’m not saying all people who dress like that are lesbians or vice versa. I’m fully aware that’s likely not what was intended creatively.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I heard a rumor that you think you're just ordinary" could plausibly including assuming/believing herself to be straight, too.
