The only twist in the entire show was Vanya being straight... (though I'm guessing it was more of a beggars can't be choosers type situation)

I don't want to be crass here, because Ellen Page is a married woman, but I don't think "beggars can't be choosers" would be a remotely reasonable analysis of the situation

Uh... Yeah. Bad wording on my part, I meant that she became romantically involved with Leonard because he was the first person to acknowledge her in a romantic way. She's not had that sort relationship with anyone else, so maybe she doesn't know she likes women? (sorry if this still doesn't make sense I'm sick right now so my brains not working)
