IIRC, he was pretty crass when as far as they knew, she was an incredibly naive woman who'd been married to him, and as the episode went on (before the reveal) it seemed she'd basically married him through coercion. That's also why Zoe gets mad at Wash.

He wasn't sexual with her. He was dismissive of her, sure, but then he acts that way toward anyone who tries to interfere with the working of the ship. She stowed away. And she was an adult person, not a child.

But he didn't coerce her? He didn't even know they'd been married, he didn't have sex with her, he didn't imply to her that she owed him anything or that he was angry at her. He made it clear that he thought her being forced on him was bad and unfair to them *both*, and that she had the right to her own life, her own choices, etc.

I always kind of thought Zoe's 'righteous rage' at Wash was pretty misplaced, in this ep (and i am *not* a Wash fan).
