IIRC, he was pretty crass when as far as they knew, she was an incredibly naive woman who'd been married to him, and as the episode went on (before the reveal) it seemed she'd basically married him through coercion. That's also why Zoe gets mad at Wash.

He wasn't sexual with her. He was dismissive of her, sure, but then he acts that way toward anyone who tries to interfere with the working of the ship. She stowed away. And she was an adult person, not a child.

But he didn't coerce her? He didn't even know they'd been married, he didn't have sex with her, he didn't imply to her that she owed him anything or that he was angry at her. He made it clear that he thought her being forced on him was bad and unfair to them *both*, and that she had the right to her own life, her own choices, etc.

I always kind of thought Zoe's 'righteous rage' at Wash was pretty misplaced, in this ep (and i am *not* a Wash fan).

I haven't watch the episode in a while but there's a massive power differential and it would be pretty hinkie of him to take advantage of it

He didn't though? She forced a kiss on him, but he was resisting any intimacy with her all the way.

His response is abject horror at pretty much every turn, so there's really no implication that he has any intention of taking advantage of it at any point.

Body of work

Same, OP. He was horrified to be married to someone without even remembering it, pissed that she'd been basically handed off to without either of them consenting, and angry that his crew found it amusing. He even told her to not take shit from other people, that she had a right to a job, her own place in the world, her own choices, etc.

He really was the good guy.

Agreed. It was like all the crew's lines were written with the assumption Mal hand done / was going to do something bad, and then they just... forgot to write him doing anything bad?
