So... for science. Predictably, some commentators are already getting wound up by the subject. Why does incest in fiction bother people? It's fiction. Why do the details of an imaginary relationship between any two characters matter? How does it effect people in any meaningful way? Why bother to care when there's so much going on in real life that's more worthy of the attention? This goes for literally any other kind of ship too. Why waste the energy being bothered by a ship of all things. Life is so short.

I mean, in this case, it seems to be less about the actual incest and more that by trying to explain it away as Not Incest, you end up insinuating that adoptive families aren't REAL families, which is fucking insulting, frankly.

Whereas if it was just a case of "Yeah it's incest and yeah I ship it, who gives a fuck, it's fiction", then we could just apply YKINMK and call it a day.

Because it's deeply annoying to have people decide your squick is up for debate. Or that being squicked by something means you don't comprehend that imaginary people are not, in fact, real.

It's only up for debate now that there are so many anti-incest fans attacking incest shippers and actors within roles featuring incestuous themes. It wasn't an issue before because anti-incest fans stayed in their own lane.

Nah. People have been treating an incest squick like it's debatable for years. See: early Supernatural and early MCU fandom, which significantly predate current fandom purity culture.

nope.

anti-incest people have been around for a long while in fandom because, get this: incest is a big squick for a lot of people and it's perfectly okay for them to be put off by it or not want to see things that gross them out.

Incest doesn't bother me but you can still be wrong about what is and is not incest. And that can sometimes be harmful in the real world - for instance, the idea that adoptive children don't 'count' is a real, harmful idea.

Ship what you want, whether or not it's incest.

Some people grew up not read Greek Mythology and it shows.

Ha ha~

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
My issue is the claim that it doesn't count as incest because they're not related. If you're gonna ship adopted siblings, at least fucking own up to it being incest.

Honestly, I get more outraged about this than the actual act of shipping siblings.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
same here.

it's not people shipping fictional siblings together that bugs me, it's the slew of people who invalidate adopted-family as 'not real' family that enrages me and it's fucking awful how they don't get that THAT'S the problem.

noooo, they're poor innocent babies who are just being persecuted because they keep insisting that any adopted family don't count as family. why is this such an issue???

just fucking own the fact that it's incest and be done with it, jfc.

Yeppppp

idk about other people but it bothers me personally because i was abused sexually by my sibling.
