Because people delete instead of orphan-ing.

with their right tho no?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's also peoples' right to download the fics, at least on AO3, where it's explicitly part of the license, so

*shrug*

(Anonymous) 2019-04-13 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
But it shouldn't be. The option to download should be something the author can disable.

NAYRT—if you think I wouldn’t transcribe some of my faves by hand if necessary, you don’t know how fandom works.

as an author, I'd still like the option to make it harder for you. but I am crap and you won't for me so it is all good.

You're not crap, I totally get why someone would feel weird about someone downloading and editing their work, it's an understandable impulse and feeling. I just don't think you have the right to actually stop someone from doing it.

If you don't want readers to be able to download your fic, AO3 is not the correct place for you to post it.

I agree that it should be possible to disable that option, but it's not, so by posting there rather than an archive that doesn't come with a built in download feature, you're implicitly consenting to have your work downloaded.

I agree with this. However, I spent five years in and old-ass fandom, c/ping every fic I read into a word file before I read it because I hated the formatting of old fic hosting websites. And let me tell you, the time and effort it takes to Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, and then Ctrl+P is extremely minimal.

So disabling the download function would only deter the borderline-indifferent and the extremely lazy.

agreed, plus there are tools to wholesale download entire websites....I've done this. It's better to just allow people to download the few fics, I've accidentally grabbed more than intended when I downloaded a few websites.

That's silly. You do realize that copy/paste exists, right? I've saved fics from Fanfiction.net by copying them into Word Documents. It was a damn good thing too, since some of those fics got deleted.
