I would have thought Reagan would be the more obvious precedent. Trump is a media personality, but not an actor.

Hold onto your pants, I bet we'll see "Minor politician Chris Evans" in 2029.

Wouldn't it be a trip if, at some presidential election in 20 years, we have Left-leaning Chris Evans vs. Right-leaning Chris Pratt.

Anti-feminist youtube nutjob Sargon of Akkad is running for parlament or something...

Sorry for the Reddit link but I found it quite concise and also sorry, I don't quite understand UK political structure. The point is....Yeesh.

Trump is not an actor.

And if you don't believe me, go watch Home Alone 2. He is famous and that did help him, but there was a lot of racism and sexism involved in his win, too. And he did not win the popular vote, but Republicans would apparently rather see anyone in office other than Hillary Clinton (the electoral college did not have to vote the way it did).

Anyway, Ronald Reagan wasn't the worst, at least when he didn't have Alzheimer's. I have the impression that Fred Grandy and Fred Thompson were actually pretty good politicians for their constituents. And I can think of a few actors who know a lot more about politics than Trump does. But, honestly, I think there should be requirement for anyone running for president to have been elected and have served as a US representative, a US senator, or a governor.

What do you have against Ike?

(also, Reagan sucked)

Reagan was better than both Bushes, Ford, Nixon and light-years better than Trump. He was also better than Carter, who seems to be a decent man, but was not an effective leader. Reagan was arguably better than Clinton or LBJ, too.

The American Political Science Association (APSA) among political scientists specializing in the American presidency 2018 poll had him 9th behind Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Barack Obama. A 2017 C-Span poll also had him 9th behind Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, Thomas Jefferson, and John F. Kennedy.

He was definitely the best Republican since Eisenhower.

I am a Democrat, but I think he was a better politician and more effective leader (sans the Alzheimer's) than the other presidents the US has had from 1963 to 2008.

Reagan was born with Alzheimer's.

ayrt

I don't know if that's supposed to be a joke or what, but they don't actually know for sure what causes Alzheimer's and while it does seem to have some heritability and genetic links, that's not necessarily true of all cases.

effective??? sure. but also directly responsible for 1) massive deregulation, both financial and environmental 2) destroying the Air Traffic Controller's strike and therefore crippling labor in america, 3) massively cutting taxes on the ultrawealthy before it was cool before the Bushes, all of which lead to the vast income inequality we have today, as well as 4) doing his very best to destroy the social safety net (and as gov of California, slashed public funding of higher education as well, starting a trend that lead directly to the absolutely bonkers student debt burden we have currently, and 5) ignoring the AIDS crisis and contributing to the deaths of literally millions of americans and wiping out a generation of queer history.

So, like, was he a charismatic fucker who could Effectively Lead and Do Things? yeah. Would I call him a "good president" in terms of the benefit or damage to the country? FUCK NO.

Right, like, if he was effective at doing bad things, why does that mean I should like him?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Was Schwarzenegger a terrible politician? People seem to like him

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I’m from California and I remember being pissed that he cut 100% of state domestic violence shelter funding.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to see domestic violence shelters fall out of existence, but ONLY IF that was replaced by housing as human right regardless of money, job, etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
He was likable but generally didn't have great policies and was a shitty administrator

(Anonymous) 2019-04-20 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Considering many of them are actually successful in their chosen profession and some are actually self-made millionaires... they would probably be better politicians than Trump.

But if they have enough sense to do all that, they probably also know they have no business in politics.

*Hugs Glenda Jackson*

Even Giles Brandreth is not bad by comparison to Trump & Regan.
