Never watched them movies, but I don’t understand fandom’s investment in [descriptor] nazis. These are fictional characters. They’re not real. I don’t think, for example, Grindledore shippers should be hated on because they’re shipping wizard nazis. If the fans sprout nazi ideology that’s a different matter, but this is often not the case.

Fictional Nazis are fictional characters but they also do and say similar things to what real-life Nazis do and say, are evil in similar ways, often have similar aesthetics, etc. So I think it seems to a lot of people like it's difficult to disentangle whatever else is going on from the aspects of the characters where they're basically doing the same stuff that real Nazis did in a fictional universe.

I don't think that anyone should be harassed for it. Do what you want to do. And I don't think it's intrinsically, completely morally wrong. But I do think that there is some real complexity there, and that people who talk about space!Nazis or wizard!nazis being bad aren't talking completely out of their asses, even knowing that it's entirely fictional. I think there is a moral argument there.

It's not that hard to disentangle, though. It is pretty easy to say these two characters are completely evil and I also like the idea of them being in love or having sex or whatever. Yes, a lot of woobifying happens with some fans. And I'm not a personal fan of that. But that isn't a necessary way to ship. And besides, fiction is still fiction, and as long as it isn't effecting your real life views, I don't think it is doing anything or anyone any harm. So I don't see the problem.

And I actually think using the term Nazi to refer to fictional characters who are not in fact Nazis weakens the term. Nazis are Nazis. There are lots of different kinds of evil. Nazis are one specific evil. Lets stop using it to refer to every evil.

Absolutely. check out the fake journalist but real comedian and political commentator Jonathan Pie's "We've Reached Peak Nazi" for a rant about exactly what Nazi means and doesn't and why misusing the term is bad.

... okay maybe I am totally missing something here, but when has the Empire ever espoused any sort of Nazi-esque beliefs in Star Wars? I thought they wanted power for the sake of having power, I don't remember them going on any sort of racial genocide. They were just eliminating the people who stood in their way, full stop.

I don't know if it was an EU thing but I feel like they were definitely human supremacists at some point

In the EU the Empire is xenophobic, pro-human, and anti-anything that wasn't human. That was only the EU, though. And that was never true of the First Order.

Thrawn was very specifically an exception who was so good Palpatine made him Grand Admiral in spite of not being human. And then sent him way out into the Unknown Regions to expand the Empire.
